Jimmy Lee Swaggart, born on March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 90 following a cardiac arrest suffered on June 15, 2025. His family shared a heartfelt message:

“Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ…”

Over more than seven decades, Swaggart carried the gospel across nations through his vibrant preaching, gospel music, and unflinching dedication to the cause of Christ.

Early Life and Musical Calling

From his sharecropper roots, born to a musically inclined Pentecostal evangelist father, Swaggart discovered his calling early. By full-time ministry in 1955 and later recording his first gospel album in 1958, he went on to sell millions of records and to minister globally through crusades in South America, Africa, and beyond.

Televised Ministry: Spreading the Gospel to Millions

In the early 1970s, Swaggart expanded his ministry to television with “The Jimmy Swaggart Telecast,” followed by the launch of SonLife Broadcasting Network (SBN) in 2010. He pioneered the format of televangelism with a passion both musical and spiritual, and his program reached hundreds of millions worldwide.

The 1980s: Ministry Height at a Crossroads

By 1986, Swaggart’s ministry had grown into a global movement, generating over $140 million in annual support and reaching millions across more than 100 countries. His crusades and broadcasts became defining events in charismatic Christianity.

The Scandals: A Painful Season

In 1988, a publicized moral failure involving a prostitute in New Orleans led to his dramatic televised confession and his defrocking from the Assemblies of God. A subsequent incident in 1991 again challenged his ministry and reputation. While deeply painful, within evangelical circles his confession—“I have sinned against you…”—became a profound example of accountability in brokenness.

A Ministry Rebuilt: Independence and Renewal

Post-defrocking, Swaggart did not retreat; he recalibrated, reorganized under Jimmy Swaggart Ministries and continued broadcasting as an independent, non-denominational ministry. Though donor support dropped significantly—by as much as 85 % for his Bible college—his work endured.

The 21st Century: A Season of Fruitfulness

  • SBN launched in 2010, bringing his preaching, worship, and teaching into homes worldwide through multiple media platforms.
  • His local congregation at Family Worship Center remained vibrant under the leadership of his son Donnie and grandson Gabriel.
  • He was honored with induction into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame—just days before his passing—affirming over 17 million records sold.
  • His heartfelt music, sermons, and outreach exemplified a renewed humility, relying on grace rather than grandeur.

Personal Life: Anchored in Family and Faith

Jimmy and his beloved wife Frances were married for over 70 years, a testament to their enduring partnership. Later years were marked by health struggles, but surrounded by family and a faithful church, Swaggart remained a figure of strong faith and perseverance.

Legacy and Lessons

Ministry Through Music and Message

His integration of heartfelt gospel music with preaching spoke to countless hearts, revealing the power of worship in evangelism.

A Model of Brokenness and Restoration

Though scandal could have ended his mission, Swaggart’s penitence and persistence illustrated that ministry can continue through grace, even in failure.

Adapting for the Next Generation

Through radio, TV, satellite, and the internet, SBN reached a new generation, proving that effective gospel ministry adapts with the times.

Family in Ministry

His church and ministry have continued under Donnie and Gabriel, a legacy of faith handed down and renewed.

10. Reflecting on His Passing

His death after a weeks‑long hospital stay following cardiac arrest on June 15, 2025, marks the close of a monumental ministry. The day after his SGM Hall of Fame induction ceremony, family memorialized him not with regret, but with joyous hope:

“He met his beloved Savior…”

11. A Prayerful Remembrance

As we remember Jimmy Swaggart:

  • We thank God for a lifetime dedicated to preaching Jesus Christ.
  • We acknowledge human frailty and celebrate how forgiveness brought restoration.
  • We honor the musical and media legacy that continues to lead people to faith.
  • We uphold the ongoing ministry under his family’s care for its future impact.

Concluding Prayer

“He fought the good fight… finished his course… kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

May his life—marked by triumphs, trials, and redemption—encourage all ministers and believers to press on in humility and grace.
