A Mile Long Table?!? Now THAT’S A Supper!

In our latest podcast installment, I had the privilege of exploring the fascinating world of Longer Tables with its visionary founder, Tim Jones. Originating as anc2025 milelongtable.org initiative to combat societal isolation, Longer Tables has grown into a dynamic movement that uses shared meals to foster human connection. It began with the simple idea of gathering people from diverse walks of life around a table where stories, not job titles, take center stage.
Tim’s concept breaks down the typical barriers we often build based on our vocations and creates an inclusive environment focused on genuine human interaction. The rules of engagement at a Longer Tables event are straightforward yet profound: no talk about work, experience the real you, and refrain from sitting next to people you already know. These principles aim to erase preconceived notions of identity and status, encouraging participants to connect on a deeper level. The rule against discussing job titles may initially lead to panic, but it is quickly replaced by the excitement of an authentic exchange of stories and experiences. As Tim suggests, the less we talk about our jobs, the more we discover about our shared humanity.Icebreakers play a critical role in getting these conversations flowing. At each event, participants receive prompts that encourage them to share details about their upbringing or memorable life experiences. These questions, much like our favorite origin stories in superhero movies, bring attendees’ personal histories to light. The magic unfolds when stories of a Latina grandma sitting beside a Caucasian state Senator reveal that beneath societal roles, we are surprisingly similar.

c2025 milelongtable.orgThis movement, however, is not without its challenges. Setting up a mile-long table, seating over 5,000 people, requires impeccable coordination and support. Tim gratefully acknowledges partners like KLTT Radio, Southwest Airlines, and local catering services, which have been pivotal in turning this vision into reality. Their shared belief in the power of food to dissolve barriers empowers these events to touch lives across various communities.

Beyond facilitating local gatherings, Longer Tables is expanding its reach into organizations and conferences nationwide. By creating dining spaces within companies, Tim aims to break down silos and encourage open communication in professional settings, which often mirror broader societal divides. This initiative has sparked interest from cities eager to replicate the success of Longer Tables in their own communities, underscoring its universal appeal and potential impact.

A unique aspect of Tim’s organization lies in its foundation on Christian values. In fact, I have had the honor of working alongside Tim, and I can tell you that he is a tremendous force for the Gospel, and with this project, he’s left nothing on the… table.  …ahem… Pardon my puns 😂

Back to it, then: Throughout history, communal meals have held deep significance in Christianity, exemplifying unity and the kingdom of God. As Tim draws parallels to the Last Supper, he emphasizes how Jesus’s approach to sharing meals encapsulates the core belief of fostering genuine relationships. This philosophy resonates closely with the goals of Longer Tables as it seeks to manifest spiritual teachings in a tangible, community-centered manner.

As we concluded our discussion, Tim articulated a vision of empowerment for civic leaders and individuals alike. By embracing vulnerability and authenticity at the table, he believes we can inspire a wider societal shift toward wellness and wholeness. Attendees are encouraged not just to participate in a meal but to experience a microcosm of unity and understanding. Longer Tables, through its unique approach, is steadily redefining what it means to be a community and how we can collectively strive for impactful change.

Longtables

Why a long table?

The table is a single, long table where people of all walks of life and diversities share a meal.

When we eat together, the table reveals our shared humanity and fundamental sameness and holds the explosive potential to increase our sense of belonging, cultivate understanding and honor our differences.
