A very special thanks to Louis Rushmore for his work with this area, and we really appreciate his good efforts. Today we return to our psalm cast. Now, from time to time, we’re going to look at the beautiful book of psalms and engage in a study. Now, some psalms may take longer than others due to their length, of course. But today we’re going to consider Psalm 2. Now, a little bit of background here. David is the writer of this psalm, and we know this from Acts 4, 25 and 26, where Peter quotes the first two verses of Psalm 2, and he says that God spoke by David. And whereas Psalm 1 addressed and commended those who delight in the law, this Psalm gives an address to those who defy the law and would speak against the superiority of the Lord. Can you imagine that? So today we’re going to read a little and going to teach a little today, if you will. But first, here is a few words from our J-Web, and let’s give you another tool that you can use in your studies.

And friends, we hope that you will download our app today. Every week we see those numbers slowly increase. It gives you access to everything that we do. So again, please feel free to download our app from International Gospel Hour. It’s free. Let’s read a little. Let’s teach a little. Psalm 2 verses 1 through 3. Why do the nations rage and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed, saying, Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us. Lesson number one, the superiority of the Lord Jehovah and His anointed. Watch this. Now, some translations may translate nations as heathen, or heathen nations were other than Israel. In the New Testament, other than Israel, the other nations around Israel were known as heathen nations. They were against God and they were against the chosen of God. And so here are individuals who will plot, meaning they will imagine or meditate things in vain, empty things of no hope. In other words, they’re not going to win. You see, the way of the ungodly shall perish. We were reminded that back in Psalm 1, verse 6. And he is anointed, that word being the anointed, those who are anointed of God. That’s a title of honor. It’s one that’s actually reserved for kings, but the expression also emphasizes the special relationship between God and His anointed. Now, when you look at that and think about that for a moment, friends, the kings of the earth set themselves, if you will, against the kings of the Lord. Now, who do you think is going to win? I mentioned Acts 4 moments ago. Well, in Acts 4 and verse 23… Who by the mouth of thy servant David hath said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ. Now going back to Acts 4 and verse 23 begins the context. And in Acts 4, 25 and 26 is where we find the reference back to Psalm 2. And to whom are Peter and John speaking? How about the rulers of that time, friends? So the superiority of the Lord Jehovah and His anointed, God’s going to take care of His people. Here’s a second thought. Let’s look at verses 4 and 5. He who sits in the heavens shall laugh. The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath and distress them in His deep displeasure. You want to deal with my anointed, as the Lord would say? Let’s look at the superiority of the Lord Jehovah and His response. In other words, He looks at His enemies and He scoffs at them and even mocks them. Psalm 37, 13, The Lord shall laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming. Psalm 59, 8, But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them, thou shalt have all the heathen in derision. Friends, the Lord is still in control. He is in control of all the governments. Daniel 4, 17. Let’s read a little. Let’s teach a little. Now, Psalm 2, verses 6 through 9. Yet I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree. The Lord has said to me, You are my son. Today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron. You shall dash them to pieces like the potter’s vessel. Oh, friends, this next part is a study by itself. When he says, I will declare the decree, verse 7, The Lord has said to me, You are my son, today I have begotten you. Now let’s add these texts into that. What about the context of Acts 13, verses 16 through 33? Hebrews 1, 1 through 6, and Hebrews 5, 1 through 5, all are referring to verse 7, to the Son, Jesus Christ, the one to whom the Lord has begotten. What an awesome application that he is providing to his anointed today. And his response is on their behalf. And he responds through the Son, Jesus Christ. Let me give you those texts again for you to look at on your own in between our studies from the broadcast. Acts 13, 16-33, Hebrews 1, 1-6, and Hebrews 5, 1-5. All those are referring here to Psalm 2 and verse 7. And they are applied to the Lord Jesus Christ. His begotten. And as the Son is the begotten, He is also begotten the Christian. Or if you will, He will begat the Christian in other words. Because, you see, he provides to the Christian the child of God, the Savior, the mediator, 1 Timothy 2, verse 4, the intercessor, Hebrews 7, 25 and 26. Dear friends, this just shows the great superiority of the Lord Jehovah and what he provides today to those who will follow him. And now verses 10 through 12 of Psalm 2. Now therefore be wise, O kings. Be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish in the way when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him. Now we see the superiority of the Lord Jehovah and His power. You know, the idea of trusting the Son by kissing, a phrase meaning of homage or adoration and worship, unto the One, the Son, whom He has begotten. When we take Ephesians 1, 22 and 23, where it speaks of God and Christ, where God put all things under the feet of Christ and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him that fills all in all. Friends, I want you to think about verses 10 through 12. What if every king, what if every president, what if every political leader would have the Lord first in his or her life and serve Him with fear and rejoice with trembling? to honor Him, to adore Him, and not perish in the way, because when you see that His wrath is kindled but a little, when you speak of the superiority of the Lord Jehovah, a little can be a lot. Without a doubt, the Christian is thankful for the superiority of the Lord and His provisions for His people, His anointed. He responds to His begotten. through the begotten Son of God Jesus, and His power is for His begotten and His anointed. For those who believe in Christ will repent of their sins, confess their faith in Christ, baptized into Christ for the remission of sins, and added to His church, walking in the light faithfully each day. Friends, we know in our broadcast we always prompt thinking, we try to, to turn us to the Word of God in our studies.
