welcome to the good news with angie austin now with the good news here’s angie hey there friend angie austin here with the good news uh so many things i want to talk to you about today i just returned uh from a trip to tennessee we flew into nashville and then went to see my daughter hope at her christian school where she’s playing volleyball and uh they that’s very strict you know uh They have curfew and they can’t have boys in the dorm and they have a dorm mom, in fact, a dorm family that lives there. And they have chapel every day where they check them in. And I spent time with her advisor and her advisor just spoke so highly of her. And then we were in the cafeteria. And the dorm mom and her husband and her sons who are grown came up to talk to us and were just raving about Hope. And then one of the other coaches for the basketball team came up and talked to us about how Hope’s developed a bond with her niece, the male basketball coach’s daughter, and how she comes into every practice and Hope’s allowed to go over and give her a hug. And then the advisor has three little boys named Uh, she’s raising her seventh kids and, uh, she’s taken in these three wonderful little boys and they’re in elementary school. She’s got her hands full. These are her seven kids now. And, uh, hope has developed a relationship with them as well. And then I went to the church with her and I, it just feels so good to have like have people tell you, you did a good job. And we, when we went to the family reunion, a lot of the relatives were talking about my kids. Cause you know, they knew them as little kids and, um, Some of them haven’t seen him for, you know, four years or so. Some of my family members see a lot of them all the time, but some of them it’s been years. And they just were raving about how well they turned out. And then one of them, Uncle Tim, said to Faith, well, we think you guys are great kids. Do you think you’re good kids? And Faith said no. Yeah, you know, knowing, you know, my friends and my siblings’ friends and, you know, what they’re doing and the things they’re involved in, I think we’re really good kids. I think we’re like the best kids. And it just made me feel so good that when you get that feedback, you know, from adults, I think I told you recently, my husband and I like volunteered with my son with his business. And so many grown business people came up to us that have known my son since he started his business when he was 12. And told us you know how impressed they are by myself and I don’t know it just feels like all the work you did I don’t know it just makes me feel so good that people like my kids You know, like that just basically like you want to raise children that people like and who are kind to others. So that just felt, I don’t know, just great. And Faith, you know, she’s younger, so I’m not getting as much feedback about her yet. But her coaches have such wonderful things to say. In fact, one of her coaches has been coming to her. She has fall league right now. And it’s not like the official season, but she comes to her games and she started coaching her, I think, in fifth grade. And now she’s in 11th grade. I mean, how cool is that? You know, that she wants to come to her games. And two of her old teachers asked for her schedule and want to come watch her. I don’t know. It just makes me feel really good. Hey, coming up, our favorite vacation spot in the United States of America is YMCA, the Rockies. And if you’ve been with me in my journey with the good news the last 13 or so years. You know that that’s where we go a lot. And they’re doing some really cool things right now that you might be able to get involved in. And I’m heading up there for the elk rut. I just love to go up there when the elk are like all over the property and they’re all through Estes Park. And so and then the fall leaves, of course, will be turning here soon and they have a discount that they’ll tell you about. And then we’ve got an NFL player joining us who’s a man of faith but also wants to talk about fantasy football. And he kind of goes by the same motto in life that I do, scripture, do unto others as you have them do unto you. And he is – has a neat story, too, of how he overcame an injury that was supposed to be career-ending. And so that’s also a neat little story. So we’re going to have Ovi Muhaly, who used to play for the Falcons and now does a podcast, join us in a few minutes. I wanted to just briefly touch on, you know, I love that website, Mark and Angel. And Mark had a 90-year-old grandma that he learned a lot of lessons from. And he shares some of those lessons in their positive website and their books. And what’s interesting to me about Mark is that he wanted to be a writer and he submitted something, an article for his college newspaper, and they rejected it. And Angel, his now wife, said, well, why don’t we just start our own website and do our own articles? And it’s immensely popular. It’s a market angel.com. And it’s just really like one of their books is a thousand little things. Happy, successful people do differently. And another one is getting back to happy, happy, getting back to happy. And another a thousand little habits of happy, happy, successful relationships. But anyway, he talks about his 90-year-old mom a lot, and I love that when he does that because he shares some of the lessons that she taught him and just some of the basics in the article that caught me that I thought I’d share with you. Well, first of all, she told him that the majority of the things we worry about really don’t matter in the long run. And she taught him, think deeply, speak gently, love lots, laugh often, work hard, give back. I love that one. Expect less, be present, be kind, be honest, and be true to yourself. Joining us today is former NFL All-Pro… Ovi Muhaly, here to share tips for managing stress during fantasy football season, some tips on how to pick a good team, and to kick off the Dentec Ultimate Fantasy Football Punishment Campaign. I just have to laugh because this weekend I was at my daughter’s on scholarship at a Christian school, and they don’t use instruments. They have to sing a cappella. And let’s just say that this weekend at her church, I was not making a joyful noise. That’s funny. Yeah, not a singer. All right, let’s talk about fantasy football season. My son’s so into it. My husband’s kind of into it. My son’s obsessed with it. He’s always trying to get, like, tips and call this person and call that person. So why is it so important to prepare and really know what you’re doing for fantasy football season, to really compete well with your buddies?
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, it’s really important. I mean, I was blessed to play actual football, reality football, and doing so at 10 years, being a Pro Bowl and All-Pro player, Even getting the chance to play with Hall of Famers like Deion Sanders and Ray Lewis and Ed Reed and Tony Gonzalez, I learned that as talented as they were, they put preparation as the most important key to victory. So now I’m helping fans prepare for something they may not expect. how fantasy football can hit harder than a linebacker, and I’ve hit several in my days. Athletes or players, we’re a bit more disciplined than most because our coaches yell at us all the time. So we’re able to follow rules a little bit better than I think the majority of students out there.

Yeah, he is a great – they have a great practice facility. Dion’s done a lot for that program. My son was in the practice facility this weekend. Anyway, I want to know how we build a good fantasy team. Any tips for doing that? I sure do.
SPEAKER 04 :
And the most important tip before I get into the nitty-gritty tips is – Have fun, relax, take a deep breath. People don’t get that this is still a game. They’re pulling out their hair, they’re crying, and they’re making it way too big of a deal. I tell them, lighten up the pressure and make it fun by joining a contest, making it a game in the game. And you can do that by joining Dentek’s Ultimate Fantasy Football Punishment Contest and turn those losses into laughs. So if you want some other tips, you can draft depth in your defensive line. Don’t overlook your bench. Go with consistent performers, not just the big flashy names. And always, I mean always, know your league scoring system because it’s a playbook to victory. Too many guys are in 3, 8, 12 leagues. And they’re going off the wrong set of rules. Like, oh, well, that’s the rule for your other league, not this league. So get your ducks in a row, play smart, and you can grind out wins without grinding your teeth.

You know, I was also looking at, you know, your background and injuries. and how you were told that you had like a career-ending injury. And I know that you’re a person of faith. I can tell just by reading about your background. We have the same motto, do unto others. I love that. I mean, that is like the way I live my life. How did you overcome like mentally being told, hey, your career, this injury is like you’re done? You wouldn’t let that define you.
SPEAKER 04 :
I wouldn’t, and it was such a – A low point in my career, and I feel for all of the players who’ve worked their butts off. highest level, and then for something out of their control, have their careers just ended. So I could have ended at two years. I got to play almost 10 years in the NFL, and I played at the highest level. I was not just the top 1%. I was the top 1% of the top 1%, and went to Hawaii in the Pro Bowls, the All-Pro game. That would have never happened if, you know, just me personally, The foundation my parents gave me in understanding not only who I was, but whose I was. And if you’re able to lay all of your concerns and all of your worries on God’s shoulders and say, I’m going to do my best because that’s in my control. You have a certain, it gives you peace. Yes. Yes. I had no choice but to give him everything, and he gave me everything. So it was a wonderful opportunity to where he did his part, I did my part, and put forth maximum effort, and good things happened.

Hey there, friend. Angie Austin here with the good news. That was pretty much our place, and I’ve been going there since I was a kid, so you can imagine how long that is. And we had our last family reunion there. It’s one of the top family reunion spots, really, if not the top, in the country. And so I thought, you know what, I’ve got to get someone from YMCA of the Rockies to talk about all the new things they’re doing. So Jason Nelson is joining us. He is the Marketing and Communications Director. And, Jason, I think I’m your biggest fan at the YMCA of the Rockies.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, well, I really appreciate it. It was good hearing about your experiences with your family. You know, I started in this position about a year ago, but like five years prior started taking my kids up to the Y and just amazing time, amazing time. And they still have an amazing time up there.
SPEAKER 02 :
we joked that, um, my daughter, when we were leaving, she’s maybe nine or 10 at the time. She’s right now on Christian scholarship for, um, at a Christian college, uh, for volleyball. She’s a freshman. She just started. And you know, that was, we, she cried when we left and I’m like, why are you crying? She’s like, this is our place. You know, this is like our cabin. This is our, this is like our place. You know, we never did get a cabin in mountains. That was our cabin in the mountains. YMCA, the Rockies Estes is my favorite, but we go to bowls. And, um, and she says better than Disney world. And I’m like, you know how much money I could have saved if I, We just, you know, would have taken them just to YMCA the Rockies instead of Disney World.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, I mean, that is not the first time that we’ve heard that. You know, I heard a story shortly after I started about, you know, family, you know, very similar. They’re leaving the Y and they’re like, well, next year, like, do you all want to go to Disney World? They’re like, no, we want to come back to the Y.
SPEAKER 02 :
I think it’s your young people, at least for me, that’s it. And I remember my husband, we were doing like a night hike and you guys hire such wonderful Christian young people. And I love your senior program too. So you’ve got the great seniors you hire, but the young people that you hire, my husband was walking in this night hike with me and we’re kind of hanging back and our kids, um, you know, now we’re about the age of these young people you hire, but he said, I didn’t even know they made kids like this anymore. Like they’re so wholesome and kind and like loving. He’s like, they’re like so different than a lot of the kids you just meet in everyday life. And I, there are a lot of kids, but where my daughter goes to school, there’s tons of kids, like the kids you hire, they are there. And I think a lot of these kids come as children and then want to come work at the Y later. And you have so many programs, you know, there’s the ice skating, there’s the roller skating. There’s a, you know, at the time when we used to go, there was zip lining and you’ve got the rock climbing and and then you have like you know tracking animals and night hikes and building a you know a shelter it’s like on every hour of the day you could be doing dodgeball or kickball or something like there is never a down moment at the ymca the rockies i think that’s why they love absolutely absolutely and like snow mountain ranch like don’t forget about the tubing hill and you know come winter as soon as we get enough snow we’re going to be opening up for nordic skiing as well we’ve
SPEAKER 05 :
We’ve got like 80, 82 kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails out there on like 5,000 acres. And it’s just amazing and beautiful.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, your ski center, the stamina and the cold, it’s so hard for me. But I have done your tubing hills on many occasions, the winter and the summer. And I remember when you first opened up the summer tubing hill, what a great draw to bring people in. But also just, I think, the affordability for families and the wholesomeness of it. Let’s talk about some of the things you guys are doing that are new that I haven’t even seen yet. In fact, I’m thinking about coming up Um, either at the end of September or October, cause you’ve got, you know, the elk rut, which is like, Oh, last year we did come up there. That’s right. For one night. And we saw that split five. You guys have this giant elk that comes up on your property. That is mind blowing. That has like more ladies than any other elk I’ve seen. You know who I’m talking about?
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, I do. I saw him just a couple weeks ago. So I was out on a hike at our Estes Park center location, and that elk was, you know, just off trail, munching on some trees, and you could see, like, the velvet off the antlers was starting to come off. Huge. You know, I made sure, you know, was keeping my distance.
SPEAKER 01 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 05 :
The rule of thumb, you know, with elk is, like, if you hold your thumb out, and your thumb covers the elk, you’re at a safe distance. But any closer and you see more of the elk, you’re like, yeah, might need to take a few steps back.
SPEAKER 02 :
Oh, that’s a great rule of thumb with the thumb. Yeah. Yeah. I like that. You know, when you take that hike to Moraine Park from your place, I love that hike. I know during that season, there’s like warnings. You need to be careful and even fence off some areas because obviously they’re more aggressive when they have all their harem with them. But that is a great rule of thumb. And when we come up, you guys have special things going on around the elk rut season. And just talk about some of the dedications you’ve been doing and some of the new things that you’ve got going on that I don’t even know about yet.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, so up at Estes Park, we’ve done a couple really big dedications. The first one is our vice family recreation and sports park. So, you know, the recreation sports park, when you first come up into Estes Park Center, it’s the heart of the campus. Like, it’s the very first thing that you see when you arrive. It’s the last thing you see when you leave.
SPEAKER 02 :
Is that the big open area? Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, we have plenty of space where families can play, gather, make memories. We added a new pickleball court. So, you know, that’s the new big thing. Upgraded, you know, several of our favorites, like our fire ring, upgraded our basketball courts, the tennis area. And, I mean, this field has been serving guests since we opened back in 1907. Like, some of the old photos of the YMCA of the Rockies, you know, show some of the early folks that came to visit just sitting out on the open field. And now there’s just so much more room for activities and, you know, so much more to do. And our pickleball court, like, I see it right outside my office, and you can hear, like, the little pop of the ball flickering. All hours of the day.
SPEAKER 02 :
Do you still have the Gaga ball pit? My kids love that.
SPEAKER 05 :
We do. We do. That was part of the renovations as well. So brand new Gaga ball pit. We’ve got a cornhole that’s there more on a permanent basis, you know, before, you know, folks would have to like rent out and, you know, drag out the wooden boards. We made some new installations, concrete for more permanent placements, new horseshoe rings. sand volleyball is out there as well. I mean, and it’s amazing, too, during the summer to see it just packed full of kids.
SPEAKER 02 :
I can’t wait to see that. I love the big chest that you guys had. And we would come up a lot, you know, for like 4th of July. And I still have this video where somebody was dressed up as like the um t-rex with the little teeny hands oh yeah and trying to run after a basketball to get it laughing hysterically every time it pops up on my memories and i share it you know people still remember it when i worked at channel two you know i got a fairly big following then from tv and i would always post my videos up there do you and the putt putt the putt putt got me and the people if you don’t realize most of this stuff is free and when i say free like You get a lodge room for a little over $100 or whatever. The prices vary. And you could eat there if you want. You could get a meal plan. But then all this stuff is free. And if you go to the craft center, it’s very economical. That’s where I actually saw your big elk that I guess they call split five. He was under the swing set, which I thought was hysterical. You guys have a great little playground right outside the craft center, which that’s one of my favorite places to go because you can paint, you can make jewelry, you can tie dye, you can do leather work. I mean, It’s like endless, the things that you can do in the craft center. And again, really economical. But he was under the swing set, like on that little hill and like watching all of his ladies. I just thought it was hysterical. This is a giant elk as big as the swing set, you know, watching his harem. And it looked like he was visiting the craft center.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Yeah. I mean, when it comes to rutting season, I mean, we have elk all over the property. Yeah, just like wandering around.
SPEAKER 02 :
Like you have to be careful. Like if you go on a hike, like you said, you can walk right into one right outside your front door.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, absolutely true. And, you know, one of the things you mentioned earlier about the hike to Marine Park, I mean, one of the things that’s really unique about us is that our property borders right along Rocky Mountain National Park, and there’s several ways that folks can hike from our property into Rocky Mountain National Park.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yes, yes.
SPEAKER 05 :
You know, at least from, you know, a national park access standpoint that you’re buttoned up. So bring your day pass. But I mean, it’s so, so easy to, you know, come stay for a night and then go on a hike early in the morning so that you can see, you know, wildlife. It kind of that pristine time, you know, as the sun is coming up.
SPEAKER 02 :
It’s heaven. It’s heaven. But I love what you do. I love your senior program where seniors can come up there and live and work. I love that. I love the young people you hire. But something I found out about recently that I didn’t even know you did, and I didn’t tell you this, you have a program. One of my former producers, he doesn’t make a lot of money. In fact, he just lost his job. I went up there for the day and I went in to get a hiking map and And I bumped right into him. And I was like, oh, my gosh, his nickname is Moose. I’m like, Moose. And he’s up there with his whole family. Right. And one of his kids had battled cancer. Another had some other health issue. And he’s like, we’re on vacation here. They have, you know, a plan, you know, a program where families who need a little help, they can come up here on vacation. Tell us about that, because that is absolutely wonderful that you guys do that. Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
So that’s, that comes through our donor sponsored programs, you know, and that’s, that’s made possible by people that believe in our mission. So YMCA of the Rockies, like, well, we operate as a hospitality and travel place where people can come and stay in our lodging. We also operate as a nonprofit, you know, so, you know, the, the The revenue that we’re driving through occupancy, it goes straight back into our mission. You know, people will donate, you know, to these donor-sponsored stays so that people can come up and stay on property. So, you know, we sponsor, you know, foster families. We sponsor families with children that are going through critical illness. We have military discounts for military families so that while they aren’t deployed, they can come up and stay with us. Same thing, too, with teachers as well. One of the things that I like to share out is we have this program called Teachers Recess where Teachers and staff of K-12 can come up and stay. The discount’s like 50% off of the stay, and it’s all made possible by our donors, folks that believe in our mission. It also extends to, so on the other side of the mountain, we have our Camp Chifure, and it’s one of the best summer camps in the state of Colorado. And, you know, we also have folks as well that donate so that kids who maybe can’t afford going up to either our day camp or our overnight camp can be sponsored through scholarship, through these programs. That’s wonderful. Anybody, you know, regardless of accessibility can experience the outdoors and experience like these things that you’re talking about that you and your family experienced during your time up here. Just that sense of like joy and relaxation and that ability of just connecting with each other in nature.
SPEAKER 02 :
that I’ve worked at a lot of big stations around the country. I worked for NBC in Los Angeles. I worked for Fox in San Diego. I worked in Santa Barbara for ABC, Channel 2 here in Denver. I pretty much worked for every network there is. So you would know that I was in foster care, that I grew up in low-income housing, that I came from a very impoverished background, and we never went on vacation once my parents were divorced. Never. I mean, my mom works in a factory and if the Buick broke down like that, you know, in our phone would get disconnected, you know. And so for you to make someone to cry for you to, you know, offer these programs for these families, it’s such a big deal because some of these kids don’t get up to the mountains that like live in Denver or that, you know, they just don’t go on vacation with their families. Like in particular, Moose, like he wouldn’t have been on that vacation up there and you’re like feeding his family and they’re on vacation. I just think it’s a wonderful thing that you guys do. to help families enjoy the outdoors that wouldn’t be able to do it, and teachers, and military people, foster families. I think this is just such a wonderful mission that you guys are doing. You mentioned you’re a nonprofit. I’ve stayed in some of the cabins that families have donated, that Long’s cabin you guys have. I know it was built a while ago now, but when we first stayed in it, it was pretty new. And it’s like a big one and some family from Texas had donated the money. And then the families don’t get the cabin. They just get to stay there a few weeks a year or whatever and get priority booking. And then we get to enjoy it. And of course, we’re almost out of time. So I want to make sure give us the website so that people can come up there and experience some of these things. But, you know, folks that want to come out and try us out, experience all the things that we’ve been talking about, rutting season’s right around the corner, leaf peeping season, the aspens are going to start turning here in, I think, like two weeks. So right around mid-September, it’s going to be beautiful out here.
