Hello there, friend. It’s Angie Austin and Jim Stovall, and we are here to talk about the winner’s wisdom this week titled, What You Say and Do. Hey, Jim.

Hey, it is great to be with you as always.
SPEAKER 06 :
I was telling you that we just got back from another one of Hope’s games. It was homecoming weekend. So it’s really fun. You know, it’s a smaller-ish town and they had like the band come out and compete against like the faculty band. And then we got to see a women’s basketball game, a men’s basketball game, and then the women’s JV game. And the men’s team, they are Freed Hardeman University in Tennessee in between Nashville and Memphis. And they were the NAIA champions last year. and they’re phenomenal for an NAIA team. I mean, it was really so fun to watch. It’s such a physical game when you watch that close up, like you almost feel like you’re going to get hurt, you know, sitting there on the sidelines.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and NAIA is so much fun because, you know, in Division I and II, they have the NIL, and it’s all about the money now and all the other stuff. And these are kids that just are really great, and they play because they love to play.
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, I forgot about that. The NIL money changes the whole ballgame. And what’s interesting is that a lot of these a lot of people think, oh, and I like they’re not good. No, we play D2 teams. And I think that this team could actually play some of the lower division D1 teams. And a lot of the reason that some of these schools are in the NAIA is because many of them are Christian schools and they don’t want to have to do some of the things that some of the other schools are forced to do. And one coach mentioned specifically that he just pardon me. She did not want men identifying as women playing against her girls. And that’s something she feels in the NAIA. She’s more protected from that. And that the NAIA, a lot of those schools are Christian schools. So there’s prayer before the games. And it’s a little bit different than a D1 game where you’re not necessarily – I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever gone to a D1 game where they have prayer before the game. All of these games, they pray and then like the losing teams gathered in a prayer circle, you know, and we’re done. I mean, not to say the crowd isn’t, you know, well behaved. I mean, I wouldn’t say that. I mean, there’s no cursing, of course, but there’s totally heckling the other team. I’m like, wow, I didn’t know it’d be so rowdy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it’s still a college game. I mean, you know, some of that is just the way it is. But no, I think it’s great. And I know a lot of the schools don’t like to play or even travel on Sundays. You know, they look at different – it’s just a different set of priorities. But particularly in basketball, I mean, you get one great player and you can play with anybody. I mean, and they have them a lot of times. So it’s a whole new ballgame. And it’s fun and it’s – you know, but it’s pure. You know, I’ve been following the service academies, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force teams. Because they’re kind of the same thing. These are kids that play because they want to and – not because it’s a financial thing. And, you know, it’s just so much fun. It makes a better game.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, and I think there’s less ego involved. Like some of these kids really start to get an attitude. So some of the players, it’s amazing to me how they are allowed to behave. And I know that there was, we’ve had some players that are pretty high up there in ranking number one a few times. And what was allowed to happen on the team in terms of bullying is different. And there was a big lecture this year about bullying and My daughter said, I wish it would have happened earlier, like, you know, the other years when there really was bullying on the team. She said now it’s like the nicest team we’ve ever had. But, you know, there’s no intimidation factor. You’re not afraid of losing an average kid. You’re afraid of losing, you know, a top number one kid. So you’re going to treat them, I’m sad to say, differently than you treat the other kids.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and that’s a difficult thing. And, you know, unfortunately you get that as long as you judge coaches and let them keep their job based on their one loss record. And, you know, they’re going to prioritize that sort of stuff. So it’s a tough balancing act.
SPEAKER 06 :
It is. You’re right. All right, so this week we’re talking about your column, What You Say and Do by Jim Stovall.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, let’s do it. Well, this is a fun one because it seems way too simple. I remember when my mentor, Lee Braxton, I was a teenager and I asked him, okay, tell me the secret sauce. I mean, you know, you became a multimillionaire during the Great Depression with a third grade education. What’s the key? Tell me the real secret stuff. He said, okay, you ready? You got a pen? You want to write this down? I’m ready for the big secret, you know. He said, you always do what you say you’re going to do. And I kept waiting for the, yeah, but what’s the big secret? He said, that’s it. You always do what you say you’re going to do. Because he said, there are two things left. Number one, you’ll be very careful what you promise people if you know you’re going to do it. And number two, you’ll become known as a person who is reliable and dependable. And then one of my favorite books that I reread almost annually, I guess, is Miguel Ruiz’s book, The Four Agreements. And his first is Be Impeccable with Your Word. And that is so – he’s not saying tell the truth. He’s saying be impeccable with your word. And we’ve become a society of people – We often say things that we know we don’t mean them, and we don’t mean them when we say them, and the other people we’re talking to. Hey, let’s get together next week. Hey, I’ll call you for lunch. Hey, I’ll do. And we all know we’re not going to do that. And, you know, one of the things as a blind person, I never leave home or my office without one of my teammates with me. And so we’ve just built upon that. One of their responsibilities is if I’m out at a meeting or a speaking engagement or whatever I’m doing, If I tell someone, I’ll call them, I’ll send them something, I’ll be at a deal. I mean, it goes right on the calendar, right then. And there’s no question about it. And I do what I put on my calendar. Now, I hasten to say, don’t let other people write on your calendar. I have 10 million books out there in print, and my contact info is in all of them. And we have made arrangements so people answer the phones around the clock. Well, if somebody calls from overseas and says, hey, have Jim call me at 10.30 next Thursday, my time. No, you don’t get to write on my calendar. I don’t know you, but I’ll call you when I can or whatever. So you can’t let other people commit to you. But once you say you’re going to do something, boy, that is sacred at that point. And it’s particularly important with kids. I always tell teachers and parents – You know, they’re not going to listen much to what you say. They’re going to watch what you do. And, you know, if you tell them something’s going to happen, hey, it’s got to happen. Don’t threaten the kid. I mean, if you do this, you’re going to get that. You’ve got to make sure that that matters, that’s real to them. Otherwise, everything else you say doesn’t matter either.
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, it drives my husband crazy because we are trying to build an ABU, an accessory dwelling unit that was like – basically turned the garage into a small home at a rental we have at the college town where my son is. And just trying to get like – all the different people to come over to do measurements and the hoops you have to jump through i see why people don’t do much building you’ve got to do like a sun a solar survey to make sure if you’re close to your neighbor’s property line you don’t block any of their sun and we’re talking like at the back of the backyard you know like way way in the back uh but you know like when they do the measurements are we going to block any of the sunshine into that back corner of their yard or like the height that it can be when it’s that close to it so we have to do like a shed roof that’s low next to the neighbor and then high and again it’s not next to their house it’s in the back of the backyard and it backs up to a highway you know what I mean like it’s not it’s not like you know prime you know real estate in Beverly Hills we’re talking like you know the highway that goes into CU Boulder Anyway, my husband, his pet peeve is when someone says, I’ll get back to you, and he waits like a week and still doesn’t hear back and then replies again. And he’s like, these are people he’s trying to pay money to do a job, whether it be concrete or electrical, whatever. And he said it’s astounding to him as a business owner how many people don’t keep their word and are so lax. Or here’s another thing a lot of people do. They don’t show up, right? And then – You call them and say, hey, I’m here. Where are you? Or it’s a call and you’re like, hey, I’m on the line. You’re not on the conference call. And they say, oh, something came up. No, that’s a lie. Because if something came up, you would have sent me a text an hour ago or the day before and said, hey, something came up. I’m not going to be able to make our call. But when I call you during our call and you say, oh, my gosh, I’m so sorry. You know, I had to do another call or something ran long or this and that. No, you forgot that. You know, like you just fess up. And that’s the other thing when they come up with these lame excuses like, oh, yeah, another call ran long or had to do another appointment or had to go, you know, into town or something else happened. No, if you actually remembered and had it in your calendar, you would have notified me that you wouldn’t be there.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, you got to own it. I’m sorry. I made a mistake. The four words that changed the world. I made a mistake. And what can I do at this moment to make this up? And, you know, because I was at a homeowner’s meeting in my neighborhood the other day, and we were talking about different contractors, and one of my neighbors said, man, I got a guy, he’s great. And I said, well, tell me why he’s great. Well, he shows up when he says he does, and he does what he promised, and he charges what we agreed to. And it’s amazing that that has become a high-level performance. That’s gold medal performance now. I mean, I think there was a time in our grandparents’ time where that was probably the minimal thing you had to do to be in business. Do what you say you’re going to do. Show up and do the work. But now, man, you don’t have to be outstanding to stand out. You just show up and do what you say you’re going to do, and it’s truly amazing. Yeah. So I really think those are important. And it took me many, many years to understand Mr. Braxton. Here’s the key to success. But I really believe that’s the key to success. And when I tell it to my college students at the Stovall Center, they think I’m as crazy as I thought Mr. Braxton was. But I said, just wait. There’ll come a day you’ll realize Jim’s not as stupid as you think he is.
SPEAKER 06 :
So it’s always do what you say you’re going to do. Be impeccable with your word basically like the Four Agreements book. Now, when you talk about how important it is for children to see you doing what you say, that they’re watching your actions. If you say don’t curse and you’re cursing. If you say don’t drink and you’re drinking. And if you say don’t smoke and you’re smoking. They’re going to watch what you do. And you said not only kids, but everyone in your world needs to understand. You say if you establish a rule or a boundary, the benefits or consequences are real. And I know that works with kids. Like if you put a threat out there that you have to follow through on whatever the consequences are for their behavior. And you said similarly, if you offer someone an incentive or compensation, it must be rock solid.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and, you know, it’s one of the things that upsets me now is we, the people, have hired people in our government to do work, and through no fault of our own, they’re not getting paid. And, you know, I mean, we’ve got soldiers around the world right now today defending us that they haven’t got paid in a while. And, boy, that’s just… That needs to be fixed immediately, and apparently we’re getting close to doing that. But, you know, those kind of things bother me because it’s happening in all of our names. I mean, you know, we promised them we would do this, and they took an oath, and they did, and we didn’t. And we need to fix that immediately. And, you know, kids need to understand that, you know, when I… When I became the guardian for Jessica, a young lady, her mom worked with me, and mom passed away, and I instantly had a pre-teen adolescent girl. And neither one of us knew what to do about that, but she and I worked it out. And I said, please don’t make me be the bad guy. We’ve agreed that if you don’t do this in this way, here’s what’s going to happen to you. Please don’t make me do that. I will do that. I promise you. You can count on it. Good, bad, or ugly, if I tell you I’m going to do something, you can take it to the bank, but don’t make me do that. And with very few exceptions, she did not. But she always knew that Jim’s not kidding.

I love that you set that out that way, though, that I will do this, but don’t make me do it. You know, like, please. Joining us is the author of the book, The Financial Anxiety Solution, Lindsay Brian Podvin. Lindsay is also a speaker in the financial arena and the cash app financial therapist. Hey, Angie. Good to talk with you again.

You as well. I love saving. We talk about this with our kids all the time. They all have their investment accounts and they’re really diligent about this. So let’s talk about holiday spending and why does it cause so much financial and maybe even emotional stress for many of us when we know it’s coming every year, but every year there’s a little bit of anxiety or we spend too much, etc.? ?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, exactly. We know that the big holidays are coming every year, but for so many of us, as you mentioned, money decisions are emotional. And a lot of us around the holidays do things like, you know, associate how much we care about a person by how much money we spend or how many gifts we give. And that leads us to, you know, doing more burning out and overspending. So I’m hoping that our conversation today can help your listeners feel a little bit less stressed this holiday season.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let’s start with that. Let’s talk about planning ahead, setting a budget, you know, a realistic one and still having fun, you know, like still enjoying the season.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, you definitely want to enjoy the season. And the way that I recommend people do that is to list out all of the different expenses that are coming up, events, travel and gifting. And then you can do exactly what you just hinted at is decide of the things on this list. Which ones give me the most joy? Which ones are the ones that I’d be really bummed out to miss? And prioritize your spending there. When you allocate your funds and your budget towards things that really matter, you’re more likely to feel better about the money that you spent. And if you’re finding yourself feeling a little bit, you know, stressed out or spread thin financially, you know, 44% of financially stressed shoppers this year are considering turning to tools like Afterpay for its convenience and reliability. Oh, okay. All right. That makes sense. I didn’t know that it did that, that it saved you those higher interest rates, et cetera. Okay. What about people who feel pressure to keep up with friends and family? Maybe they give expensive gifts and you feel that pressure to also do so. Or maybe we want to say no to something during the holidays that we think could be expensive, but we still want to have fun.
SPEAKER 08 :
yeah i think it’s really important just to be clear with your family and friends um you know overspending because you think somebody wants you to isn’t usually a good choice and i often find that your friends and your family are so understanding and relieved if you’re just clear with them instead of just avoiding them or not responding to their invitations just be truthful say you know that that party sounds great or that gift exchange sounds great but i’m really maxed out on my spending this year or Is there a way we can celebrate in a lower cost manner? And most of the time, you’ll find that the people in your community totally understand. And it can feel a little bit awkward, but it’s way more awkward and stressful just to ignore somebody.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I agree. And you’re right. People, I would much rather someone tell me than overspend. You know, I mean, people are so understanding of that. And if they’re not, that’s really not your person. You know, if they don’t understand that you’re stretched a little thin financially. Yeah, you don’t want friends like that that don’t understand that. How can people balance long-term financial goals with that short-term pull of the holiday shopping? I like that, you know, breaking up the payments.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, breaking up the payments can definitely help so you can continue contributing to those bigger financial goals, such as making sure you’re saving up for an emergency fund if that’s a goal of yours. And the other thing is just acknowledging that things may ebb and flow, and it’s okay to do that. It’s okay to make sure that maybe you saved 10 months up out of the year and you weren’t able to save as much as you wanted to in November and December. Instead of beating yourself up for it, Give yourself credit that 10 out of the 12 months, you saved up some money and don’t sell yourself short.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I think that’s a really good way to avoid regret. Like you might have made a few mistakes or overspent on a few items, but give yourself credit for the fact that, you know, in general, you’re, you know, doing your company matching or you’re getting your, you know, emergency fund funded or you’re saving for some real estate. So to kind of give yourself some grace.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, exactly. I mean, you sound like me right now, Angie. I’m loving everything you’re saying.
SPEAKER 06 :
You’re funny. All right. And also, before we get the info on where people can go, tell us a little bit about your book as well.
SPEAKER 08 :
Sure. So my book is called The Financial Anxiety Solution, and it’s an interactive workbook style book. that can help you understand the way you think and the way you feel and the way that you behave around money so that you can spend and save and invest in alignment with what feels best for you. And we know that when we set financial goals that matter to us, we’re much more likely to achieve them than just following somebody else’s rules who told us we need to do A, B, and C.
SPEAKER 06 :
And what is one of your, you know, I know you speak on this topic, obviously. What is one of your favorite tips that you give people?
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, one of my favorite tips, and I think it fits into the holiday season quite well, is that if you make a mistake with money, remind yourself you’re not bad at money. You’re a human and we can all learn from our mistakes and, you know, make lessons from them. But so many people just beat themselves up. So if you’ve made a money mistake, I want you to remind yourself that you’re not bad with money. You’re just a human.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and get back on track. That’s one thing. It’s not a life – we’re not talking about if you make a whole lifestyle mistake and you overspend daily. We’re talking about a couple of mistakes, but try to get yourself on track because, boy, life is so much better when you plan for the future because I grew up really poor. And I just got back on like my fifth vacation in like, I don’t know, a matter of like a month or two. You know what I mean? Like my lifestyle is so different now because I can travel and do radio. And so growing up in like low-income housing and now I just went on a cruise. We’re doing a two-week cruise over Christmas. I just got back from a tournament in Nashville. I’m going with my girlfriends to the Keys. I just did a cruise up the coast of California. I went with my girlfriends to Arizona. You know, it’s like it’s a totally different life. But it’s only that way because I never wanted to be poor again.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, and what you’re talking about is reminding me of something else, which is these opportunities to take trips together, to collaborate with your friends, and to experience things. Sometimes there can be that pressure of getting all the money stuff in order. And I don’t think I shared this with you last time, but Cash App has a pools feature that is exactly what it sounds like. It allows you to pool your money into one place. And it simplifies contributions for things. So, for example, instead of paying up front for a vacation rental and chasing all your friends down for them to pay you back, you can instead say, hey, here’s the cost of the vacation rental. Everybody can contribute what they’re comfortable or able to. And then once the money is in that pool, then the person who’s organizing can go ahead and book that travel and not be out a bunch of money because they were the first person to pay for it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, that’s good because we’ve got four girls going to the Keys and we’ve got to divide up everything. You know, and I have to stress, Lindsay, all of these things I’m talking about, like I’m older, right? I’m more towards retirement age, maybe not quite yet. But so, you know, I have my real estate. I have my rental properties. I have my, you know, I saved in my 20s and 30s, did all the company matching. I don’t order drinks when I go to a restaurant. I don’t order desserts when I go to a restaurant. I don’t go to Starbucks. And I mean, like you have to weigh what’s important to you. And for me, it’s travel. So I don’t buy a Chanel bag. But, you know, but but I will take a trip, you know, and so I don’t need an expensive piece of jewelry. I’d rather go to Europe. You know what I mean? So figure out what’s important to you and then spend your money there. But the things that don’t matter to you, like I don’t care if I get a drink at a restaurant. I don’t care if I have a dessert or a really expensive meal or a concert that’s, you know, four hundred dollars. It doesn’t matter to me. So then I skimp on this. I’m frugal on the things that, you know, that matter to me. But I went out for a forty dollar breakfast the other day and I liked the waitress. I tipped her forty dollars. And it made her day. That’s important to me, not trivial, flashy things. You know what I mean? Does that make sense? I’m only spending money on something that is valuable to me.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, and I love this example, which is you ended that sentence with, I spend money on what’s valuable to me. And that’s the most important thing is spend money on the things that matter. And, you know, dial down your spending on the things that don’t. And if you are saving up your money in an emergency fund or a savings account, make sure that money is working for you, right? Yeah, don’t laugh at me because my husband is 6’6″, and I’m 5 feet tall. So I wear my chucks a lot. And I have them in every color, even like a mint and like a peach, which I don’t even know how I got them, like a peachy orange. And then I put a little lift in them.
