good news with Angie Austin and we are joined by our friend Scott Montgomery he is the author of the book how did you get here lessons of unconventional success welcome back Scott thank you Angie how are you I’m doing well hey I just wanted to kind of go over with you today we usually break down the book but you know a lot of people are you know new year and they want to try something new I remember one of my co-workers like new year new job and she really wanted to find a different career and And, you know, people that are our age with our kids, you know, almost grown, our kids are you’ve got teens and one in college just like I do and three kids. And we’re thinking about, like, what’s the next chapter? Like, I’ve taken kind of more of a part time role in working because they’ve taken so much of my time. the last few years. So then what’s the next chapter? So I just wanted to get advice from you because it’s never too late, but a lot of people just feel stuck. Like, well, I’ve been in this job. I’ve gotten a few raises. I have good benefits. I really don’t like it. And I’m kind of stuck. And my nephew said to me recently, well, Auntie Angie, I don’t know if I really like my job, but isn’t that kind of like what a job is? You don’t necessarily like it. You just work for the sake of working to make money to survive. And I’m like, oh, I don’t want them to feel that way. I don’t want people to live like that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, that’s a tough one. There’s a big spectrum of how that can be accomplished. And I love that you’re giving me the opportunity to talk about it a little bit because that really hones in on the coaching aspect of some of the things I’ve been trained in and some of the things I like to promote through the book and through my leadership lessons. And that is processing that inquiry with someone who can help you process it, i.e. coaching, is a great way to engage in making those decisions. Because the first thing and the most important thing is just because you don’t like your job, don’t jump out of the frying pan into a fire. Jump into a plan. Set the goals. Get someone to work with you on that and talk about what the pitfalls are and be prepared to navigate those before you just quit your job and start something new.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes. And I agree with that whole, you know, don’t get real emotional and just quit. And, like, I’ll show you. I remember one of my colleagues in news said, He really didn’t like the guy that ran the promotions department. So he decided he was going to come in into the promotions department meeting and grab his groin and make some off-color comments and really tell him off. And he was a hero to all the other people in the promotions department because, oh, look what he did. And then I found out later when I ran into him, he wasn’t a hero to his wife and kids because he was still looking for work.
SPEAKER 03 :
And he was in the parking lot going, what have I just done?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and I’m sure his wife was like, really? You’ve got to control. Your calmness is a superpower. You’ve got to control your anger and your need to get even or tell someone off and put your family first. You’re not a single guy. So you have to have a plan, I agree, before you just go off and, well, I’m just going to quit. Right. You know, I also think it’s really important if you just do your best to prepare financially. When my husband started his business, we sold the home that we, when we got married, we had built. And we bought a home that was much more affordable. And that actually worked out in the long run because it actually increased quite a bit in value in the few years we lived there. But I wasn’t real thrilled to move from this really great house to this okay house.
SPEAKER 02 :
You built it. Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER 06 :
And so we did that just because we didn’t want to go into any debt and we saved too, right? So we’d have this backup money. Well, I was able to do enough jobs, you know, piece together like a radio job, do a commercial here, do this, you know, this now. So I probably had seven jobs. tax forms that year from different gigs that I did. So we didn’t go into any debt and we lived off my income and we made a lot of sacrifices, but we had a plan financially so that we wouldn’t be living on charge cards, et cetera. And I think that’s a big part of writing out your plan, really being prepared. But you’re a big fan of having someone like a coach or someone really work with you for the plan.
SPEAKER 03 :
A hundred percent. And two things just come up for me in your story. And that is that anyone wants to change their career. They have to expect sacrifice. They have to expect sacrifice because you don’t jump out of a frying pan into, you know, a pool of gold. Right. So you sacrificed your old house to then move into a house that you could tolerate. And then here comes the hard work. You had seven different tax forms.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
So people need to realize their goals don’t come easy, but they have to stay structured. And that does lead into who’s your accountability partner? Who’s your coach? Who’s the person that isn’t making the decision of the career change for you but is actually saying, have you processed this? What are your objectives? What does the goal really mean? What is it you’re trying to accomplish that’s not fulfilling you in the job you’re in now? And, you know, for me it was money and for you it was money and you sacrifice and you plan and you’re strategic. And I never left one thing without the other already queued up. It’s something I think I like to tell a lot of the kids that I mentor. You don’t leave to go stand in the parking lot and start looking for a job. Leave a job for a job. And hopefully that job is more fulfilling. Eventually, hopefully it’s something you’re driving.

Hello there, friend. Angie Austin here with the good news. And the good news is I have a PETA friend joining us again. And I think this is definitely a God wink because I have been letting my cats out a bit and they love to go outside. And I’ve had really second thoughts about it, wondering if I should. And joining us is Sarah McFarland. She is a spokesperson for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Association. and also something so cool that i did not know is that peta has a faith-based division i had no idea so i want to talk about that as well so welcome to you sarah thank you thanks so much for having me on okay so we have two and a half acres my cats climb trees and i go outside with the three dogs and the two cats right so the five of us hang out in the backyard and they follow me everywhere i go so generally the cats just get called like the dogs and we all go back inside But recently, Mr. Fluffy, Mr. Fluffy and Kitty Man, they have decided they like to stay out and climb trees without me. And so it’s like, oh, it can’t hurt. Right. It can’t be a problem. But now they’re liking to stay out like 12 hours a day because, you know, it’s a really great yard with lots of trees. And so apparently I’m not supposed to be doing that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, the thing is, we’re just reminding everybody, of course, that our cats depend on us to keep them safe, of course. And every moment a cat is allowed to roam outside unattended, they face potentially deadly risks like death. Speeding cars or diseases or parasites or other wildlife or even attacks, shockingly, from cool people. So letting cats outside unattended, it can be very, very dangerous. And that’s why, you know, the safest place for cats is indoors.
SPEAKER 06 :
I mean, they are pets. Right. And one of them is a kind of trusting and slow. The other one’s like more of like a hunter mentality. So I don’t worry as much about him, per se. But with that said, I have been worried like, oh, gosh, would I need to give them extra shots now that I was letting them outside, which obviously I won’t be doing anymore. And I also around Halloween told the kids, don’t you dare because they wait for the door to open and they’re hiding. Right. So the minute that door opens, it’s like a flash. where they jump outside the door because they’re so excited now to go out there and so you really have to be careful so told the kids do not let them out around Halloween because there are bad people out there who harm cats and we don’t want that to happen and you know and like you mentioned you know traffic etc but I wondered like if someone decided like hey I’m still going to let my cats out are there extra vaccinations they should get or what are the dangers of like extra dangers of disease etc that we face with the cats going outside yeah so you know
SPEAKER 08 :
Cats outside, they face so many dangers like parasites and upper respiratory infections and all kinds of diseases that are outdoors that cats kept indoors don’t face. And then, of course, there is the added threat of, like I said, attacks from cruel people. And every single day at PETA, we hear multiple reports of people attacking cats. We’ve heard, I don’t even know how many times, stories of people setting cats on fire, beating them to death. stabbing them, poisoning them, shooting them with guns or bows and arrows. And we’re seeing this abuse. We’re seeing it across the country. And what’s so heartbreaking is that preventing these deaths, it’s as simple as just keeping our cats inside. That’s where they belong.
SPEAKER 06 :
Now, when we talk about, you know, outdoor cats or this cruelty, is there, you know, people are aware of that because there was something going on with bunnies recently, and I saw it on Nextdoor where, of course, everyone gossips and spreads all the, you know, whatever’s going on in the area, which is actually usually really helpful to know what’s going on. But who do they report something like that to?
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, definitely a quick call to the authorities. That can mean the difference between life and death for an animal in danger. So we urge people never ignore an animal in distress or any suspicious activity you might see or hear. So this could include hearing a gunshot or hearing Do you suspect maybe one of your neighbors is tainting cat food and leaving it out? Or do you see reports, like I’m next door, cats, a lot of cats suddenly going missing? We just urge you definitely alert police or animal control immediately. And definitely make helping that cat a priority. And if you’re able to safely document the cruelty, either with, you know, taking photographs or video, definitely do that and submit it to authorities. And, of course, we all can help prevent this abuse by urging our friends, our family members, our neighbors, everybody we know, keep your cats indoors and let them know the risks.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right. I’m curious. about this TNR program or programs. A lot of my friends, you know, help out cats that they, you know, are feral or, you know, just have been left behind when someone’s moved, et cetera, or maybe just run away. What are these trap and release programs? Explain that to us.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, that’s a great question. I’m really glad you brought that up. It’s important for us to remember whether they’re homeless or part of a family, whether all cats are domesticated. They depend on humans for their food, their water, their shelter, their veterinary care, everything that they need. And TNR for cats, it really means trap, neuter, and re-abandon because these cats are just turned back out outside to face these risks and they’re guaranteed short, miserable lives outside. The average cat who’s who either lives outside or is let outside has a life expectancy on average of only three to five years. Cats who are kept indoors, they can live 20 years. I had a cat live 20 years, my first cat. Had her from the time I was four years old to 24. So that’s the thing. When cats are released outdoors, of course, they suffer from dehydration and starvation and parasites, like I said, the upper respiratory infections. And something else that we have to be aware of is that when a cat isn’t a victim, a cat is a predator, you know. And on average, cats outdoors will kill 250 birds and other animals every single year. So that’s why PETA, we don’t support the TNR programs. We definitely support spaying and neutering. Yeah, that we are 100% in favor. We’ve always been in favor of spaying and neutering. But when you release them back outside, we’re just allowing cats to continue suffering.
SPEAKER 06 :
Now, when I introduced you, I talked about PETA’s faith-based division. I didn’t know about this, so tell me about this.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, so that’s actually my division. I oversee our faith-based outreach, and our division is called PETA LAMS, which stands for Least Among My Brothers and Sisters, from Matthew 2540. And we have all kinds of great resources, free resources for people to to get their faith community active for animals. And our biggest resource right now is our six week companion animal grief program. And this is a fully scripture-based grief program for people who have lost animals who are close to them. And it helps the reader to process their grief biblically, you know, with scripture. And it also is reminding them that one day they are going to have an eternal reunion with their animal. And it also teaches them so much about what the Bible says about animals, who they are and why. their place in creation and our responsibility as stewards. I feel like it’s such a blessing for me because, you know, over my gosh, 30 years of working for really every major TV network there is and now having my own radio show, I’ve interviewed so many fascinating people. And one of my favorite questions is like, tell me about where you got your passion for pets and, you know, and Christianity. Like, can you go back a little bit and figure out when you really feel that you were led to work with animals and that faith was also something that was really important to you to integrate into all of that? Where did this start?
SPEAKER 08 :
For sure. Well, you know, I’ve always felt a deep connection with animals since I was a kid. And as I got older and I learned more about, you know, the issues facing animals and, you know, global industrial scale abuse that animals are suffering. I went vegetarian when I was 20 and then I went vegan in 2018. So 10 years after that. and I was working in Christian ministry actually for about eight years. I was working in small group ministry, and I loved my church, my church family, but I was always frustrated that animal rights was just never an issue that was really talked about in church. And I just felt such a discrepancy. And it wasn’t malicious. I just don’t think a lot of people know the issues that animals are facing because these issues are hidden by industries that abuse animals. So it was frustrating for me as a Christian thinking, well, When I saw PETA Lands, I thought, this is an incredible opportunity. So I joined staff February of last year. And having the ability to engage with faith communities, showing them, like, look, our faith is so pro-animal. God loves his animals. He cherishes every animal he’s created. And they’re going to share heaven with us. That’s the best part. Like, they’re their own individuals. God loves them. God cares for them. And we have a deep responsibility in God’s eyes to be good stewards towards them. And definitely, Peter Land equips people to do that.

You know, I have to tell you that I also love your cats’ names, Mr. Lowry, Baby Jane Hudson, and Norman Bates. Funny that you have Norman Bates, but I was getting married and I named one of my cats.

Oh, that’s so funny. I was getting married and, you know, one of our cats I wanted to name. So I said to my husband, hey, I found this cat at the shelter and I really want to get it. And since I was going to have, you know, be Mrs. Austin, I named the cat, you know, Mr. Austin. But I want to tell you with Mr. Lowry, you know, if you have children, there is an issue that one of the kids came over for a sleepover and went home and told my friend, her mom, oh, my gosh, I love sleeping at Faith’s house. That’s one of my girls. I love sleeping at Faith’s house because Mr. Austin always comes up to snuggle with us. And she said, what? She said, oh, yes, Mr. Austin always comes up to our room and snuggles with us. And I was mortified. She called me and she said, I finally figured out that Mr. Austin is a cat, not Faith’s dad, not your husband.
SPEAKER 07 :
But I thought, wow, I will never – I will never name another one of my cats by the same name as my husband ever again. I was like, talk about a confusing scenario. I know. I know.
SPEAKER 08 :
Definitely need some explanation. Oh, my goodness.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes, I knew there was more to the story. Oh, gosh. Oh, God. Sarah, I just love talking to you, and I love all the PETA interviews.

I’m so thrilled that I get to do, and I’m just such an animal nut. I have, as I mentioned, five of my own, which I know I’m a little kooky, but yeah. You know, it happens. You just, you know, sometimes can’t turn him down. Well, and one was trapped, you know, in the wild. And they told me if he was older than five months, sometimes some of their feral, you know, tendencies are difficult to, you know, like, love away. But they told me if I could get him before five months, because he was right at five months, that I should be, like, okay. So thank you so much. Give us a website again where we can go.
