Hey there, friend. Angie Austin here with The Good News. We are pleased to welcome Dr. James Merritt. You may have seen him on TV. I’ve watched some of his sermons. And he’s here to talk about his book, The God Who Hears. Welcome, Dr. Merritt.
SPEAKER 05 :
Angie, thank you for having me on the program. I hope things are doing well in Austin, Texas.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, where are you?
SPEAKER 05 :
I’m in Atlanta, Georgia.
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, I used to live in Roswell. I’m based in Denver now, but Austin’s my last name, though. Oh, okay. I’m sorry. Oh, no worries.
SPEAKER 05 :
In fact, I was just out in Colorado Springs last week. Beautiful country out there, and I know where Roswell is, so come on back.
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, they talk about where you live and the South being the Bible Belt, but I think Colorado Springs is the buckle.
SPEAKER 05 :
It may be. That’s exactly right. It’s a beautiful place.
SPEAKER 03 :
It sure is. All right, so give us an overview of the God who hears.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, Angie, this actually came out of a series of messages I’ve never done before, actually, on what I call Paul’s prison prayers. He prayed four prayers all while he was in prison. They’re found in Philippians, Colossians, and Ephesians. And I just did a series of messages on them, and my publisher just picked up the idea and said, hey, why don’t we do a devotional on prayer based around those prayers, which is what really the book is all about. And it’s really going back to actual prayers that probably the greatest Christian, not counting Jesus, of course, ever lived, actually prayed, not in good times, but in difficult times. And so that’s really kind of what the book is all about.
SPEAKER 03 :
I think sometimes people think that prayer is kind of like one and done. I’ve got three teenagers in high school, and one of them was like, well, I prayed in math class, and God didn’t answer or didn’t help me at all. I’m like, well, it’s kind of a process, I believe, in that we have a hand in doing the legwork in order to help get those prayers answered. I wonder why people think it’s like a genie in a bottle.
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, you know what? As part of that cultural, I think we live in an instant society. As you know, we want everything. We want everything now. Number one, number two, I’ve been asked that question and are told that many times in my ministry. And I remind people, Angie, we forget no is an answer. We don’t like that. God’s answer is no. But sometimes God answer is yes, but not now. You see, we’re concerned about time. God’s not concerned with time. He created time. God’s concerned with timing. He’s never early. He’s never late. He’s right on time. And that’s why Jesus said, when he said, ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you’ll find. Knock and the door will be opened. All three of those verbs are in the present tense of the Greek language. In other words, what he said was continually ask, continually seek, continually knock. So I tell people this. Don’t ever give up on the God who never gives up on you.
SPEAKER 03 :
I love that. Well, you’re obviously a very effective and articulate speaker. So I want to know a little bit more about you. I watched a couple of your sermons with my mom. We take care of grand-grand. And a grand-grand lived down there in Roswell for quite a while. So I understand that you’re a past president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Tell us a little bit more about you because you’ve got quite, you know, you’ve done a lot of interviews, 60 Minutes, MSNBC. So it’s kind of cool we got you on the show. So I want to talk about the book more, but so people understand who you are, give us kind of, you know, the elevator speech.
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, I’ll be honest. It might be a letdown because I’m just a country boy from a little town outside of Atlanta called Oakwood, Georgia. I tell people, if you remember Andy Griffith, Oakwood would make Mayberry look like New York City.
SPEAKER 03 :
Hilarious.
SPEAKER 05 :
I grew up in the country. I know what it is to work in a garden. I mean, I did all of that. And God, you know, I’m the first person in my family that ever went to college. I was going to be a lawyer, but my senior year in college, God called me into the ministry. Went to seminary, got an MDiv, got a PhD, got married to the greatest woman in the world. And I guess the best thing that God’s done for me, Angie, is I’ve never forgotten where I’m from. I’ve never forgotten my roots. In fact, I have just moved back, believe it or not, to a house six minutes from where I grew up.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, cool.
SPEAKER 05 :
And so, you know, I just cut my feet grounded in whatever God has done in me. I tell people this all the time. The only thing good about me is that Jesus lives in me.
SPEAKER 03 :
I love that. You know, when I lived in the South, the thing that cracked me up that’s so different than any other part of the country, which you may not realize, I would go to the grocery store and you could barely get through the aisles because people would stop and just like talk, like talk, like chit chat. How’s Bobby? You know, oh, he’s Billy Lee back in school or whatever. And I was like, what? on earth is going on? Why are people just standing in aisles? People would go to the taxidermy shop or the barber shop and they would go there for an hour to talk.
SPEAKER 05 :
You know what’s amazing?
SPEAKER 03 :
They don’t do that other places. I’ve lived all over the country. It’s only the South. I swear to you, it’s only the South.
SPEAKER 05 :
And the good thing about it, even though we’re more cosmopolitan, obviously, than we were 50 years ago, but I’m telling you, people that come here, visit here, move here from other places, there is still Southern hospitality.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, totally.
SPEAKER 05 :
People are still like that. You drive down the road. I live on a street, a busy street. I don’t know 95% of the people that live in my neighborhood, but everybody waves at everybody. Everybody will stop and talk about it. It’s just a great place to live. It really is.
SPEAKER 03 :
I love that. And, you know, so many times my girls and I laugh, like, you know, I’ve got teenage, beautiful, blonde daughters, you know, and I cannot tell you how many times we’ve had a door dropped in our faces where the other day it hit Faith’s foot and Hope was like, wow, that wasn’t very gentlemanly. If you’re in the South, no man is dropping the door in your face when he’s walking out before you.
SPEAKER 05 :
No, ma’am. No, ma’am. To this day, my dad would come back from the grave and whip me if I did that.
SPEAKER 03 :
And having lived in the South, I just love those manners. Okay, so now we know a little bit about Dr. James Merritt. Let’s get a little more detail on your book, The God Who Hears. What are some things you want us to know that we take away from the interview today?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, the biggest thing is just really the title of the book. There’s a great verse of scripture that says, Oh, you who hears prayer to all flesh, all flesh will come. And just think that just listen to those three words. God hears prayers. What an amazing statement that the God who runs the universe on a daily basis and the God who spoke it into existence. Every time a follower of Jesus opens his mouth in sincerity and purity, God gives him his undivided attention. God hears every word that he says, and God will answer his prayer. Sometimes it will be yes. Sometimes it will be no. Sometimes it will be different. Sometimes it will be delayed, but God hears and answers prayer. And if that alone does not motivate people to take time out of their schedule and pray, I don’t know what will. The second thing that I want people to get out of the book is this, and this really is to me the secret sauce. If we’ve got to get out of this idea that prayer is primarily to get something from God, that is not the primary purpose. The primary purpose is to give something to God, to give him praise and worship and thanksgiving. And the reason I know that is because, you know, when Jesus said, don’t pray like the pagans do. You don’t have to repeat things over and over and over. You don’t have to, you know, use these little, you know, God bless me, help me, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, because God already knows what you need. Well, some people say, well, wait a minute. If God already knows what I need, why should I pray? Well, there’s two reasons. Number one, God commands us to pray, so that’s all you need to know. But number two, that tells me something. If I will make my prayers, first, God-focused, and then if I will make my prayers, secondly, others-focused, God will take care of my needs.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now, what do you think, and I love what you said, and I know it’s going to stick with me about how no is an answer to prayer, whether we like it or not. Why do you think that what we believe about prayer also reveals what we believe about God? Because when I read that statement, I was a little like, oh, it made me kind of feel sad, because prayer should be not just asking, it should be about like, communing with the Lord, praising the Lord, developing your relationship with the Lord. And so I don’t know that I always go into prayer with the intention. Like, I don’t know, it makes me sad that it reveals what we believe about God because it gives me kind of a kick in the pants.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, great example. If the President of the United States, if his office called you today, forget who the President is, by the way, but if the President of the United States called you today, And they said to you, listen, the president would love to meet with you privately in the Oval Office tomorrow. We’re going to be sending a jet down to Atlanta. You just need to be at the airport at such and such a time. The jet will fly you to the White House, fly you back. You’re going to have an hour with the president. If you hung up and you said to yourself, I’m not buying that, I don’t believe that, and you don’t show up at the airport, they fly down there, you’re not there, and you don’t miss it. What was the problem? The problem was not that you didn’t believe in the airplane. The problem was not that you didn’t believe that you got the phone call. The problem is you don’t believe the president keeps his word. And so if God says, I do hear prayer, and if God says, I will answer prayer, and then you refuse to pray, what you’re really saying, to be honest, is, God, I just don’t believe you mean what you say.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, yeah. All right, so some people, you know, have difficulty with prayer or they get distracted. What advice do you give to someone who’s in a situation where, whether it’s a trial, you know, something going on with, you know, a medical issue, whatever it may be, and they’re just not sure exactly what to do. Like, I don’t know what to do.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, yeah. Great question. In fact, I’m going to make it even broader. My answer is going to be even broader. First of all, the best way to get into prayer in any situation, whether things are good or bad, doesn’t matter. The best way to get into prayer is always praise and thanksgiving. The psalmist said, enter his gates with praise and into his courts with thanksgiving. I have found every morning when I spend my first part of my praying, I don’t ask for things. I need this, need that. I want to praise you. I want to thank you. And so in the difficult times, what does the Word of God say? In all things give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Not for all things. Angie, but in all things. So even in the midst of a crisis, you say, boy, things are bad. Yes, but God is good. Yeah, but you know, things are not going my way. That’s okay. The things are going to go his way. So you can always be praiseful. You can always be thankful. And it’s amazing that when you do that, it really does put you in the mood to really pray.
SPEAKER 03 :
I like that. You do encourage people to give thanks, as you just mentioned, in every situation. Obviously, for a lot of people, it’s hard to do. A lot of people are just not really thankful people. But as Christians, obviously, we’re called to be. So how do we adopt that practice?
SPEAKER 05 :
You know what? The answer may surprise those who are listening. Go to the cross. If I were to say to someone, are you thankful for the cross? Are you thankful that Jesus suffered, bled, and died on it? Well, sure I am. Yeah, I’m thankful. Okay. Well, if you can be thankful for the worst thing that’s ever happened on this planet, for the worst evil and sin that was ever committed, deicide, literally, we killed the Son of God. If you can be thankful for that and in that, there’s nothing you’re going through you cannot be thankful in and thankful with.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now, do you think – all right, I’m going to ask you two things because I want to tell you why I believe in God’s power because I’m going to say a lot of us do underestimate God’s power, but I think some of us have had experiences where we know for sure that he’s real. But I just want to ask you, normally I spend about 15 minutes with my guests, but I have another 15 minutes. If you can stick around, I’d love to continue our conversation. Sure. Okay, great. Good to be with you, Angie. Thank you for letting me be on there.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay, so we’re talking about prayer, and I was talking about how people underestimate the power of prayer. People always knew when I worked in news that I was a Christian. I never hid that, but you can’t necessarily openly talk about Jesus, and I’d always wear a cross until one of my bosses in L.A. said I couldn’t wear my crucifix anymore. It wasn’t a crucifix, but… I guess you didn’t know the difference per se. And I remember my assistant news director, I was getting ready. I went to Bel Air for a church at Bel Air Presbyterian Church on my way home. So that’s like one of the greatest. That was Ronald Reagan’s church, in fact. So I loved that church. It was. Yeah, I loved it. So I was on my way there. My news director said, assistant news director said, I didn’t even know people went to church anymore. And, you know, this is probably 15, 20 years ago. And so but it was, you know, everyone knew I was a Christian and people would then when they had problems or issues come to the makeup room. You know, like, I mean, we got up at 2.45 in the morning, so it’s very early. They’d come in there while I was doing my makeup and talk to me about, you know, death of a family member or sick or going through a problem or whatever. So it was kind of like where I’d minister to people. Well, I’m sitting on the set one time, and one of the anchormen had said to me, like, I had a hard time with, really hard time with stories about news stories about children and you know being harmed and it really got to my heart and I’d get upset and I remember crying once in one of our news meetings and they kind of joked around they go well one of us still has a heart so I asked this anchorman does some of these stories get to you we were in the break and he said nothing gets to me anymore and then he said you know why I know you have really strong faith like why do you believe in God And I think back, I didn’t have a great childhood. One of my brothers was murdered, and after he was murdered, I remember, thank you, I remember talking, I don’t know, just feeling upset, this, that, and the other. And I remember looking out at the sand. At the time, I’d really gotten out of my, I educated myself out of poverty, so I lived in a penthouse in Marina Del Rey on the beach. The only thing I could see was the ocean and the beach, and no one was out. There was very stormy. And my brother who’d been killed, he had done this painting where It’s like that when people talk about the two sets of footsteps and then you only see one and that’s when Jesus carried you through the turmoil. And so I’m watching this guy walking away and it was just weird. It looked like that Jesus painting, you know, and nobody’s on the beach because it was so windy and it was just yucky. And then the sun just came out of nowhere and it was shining right on this guy that to me looked like that Jesus painting that my brother had done. And it was so dark and the clouds were so dark. And it was just this light that just slammed onto this man that looked like Jesus. And I experienced that peace that surpasses all understanding. And I just started sobbing. And it was like that experience where I’ve had about two or three times where where it was not even a question to me that the Lord was real. Another time I was on the highway in Los Angeles, and there were all these accidents, and I’d gotten out of my car, and the CHP officer was right next to me, and a truck slammed into a Good Samaritan’s car who’d gotten out to help us. And within literally that time, truck hit my car and I was pinned against the retaining wall and I should have been crushed, but I could feel the car on me, but it stopped. And the CHP officer, he said, Angie, I ran into him later. He pulled me over for speeding like a month later in in LA, like, I mean, are you kidding me? Like one CHP officer in all of Los Angeles pulls me over and he goes, are you Angie Austin from NBC? And I was like, yeah, he goes, I was at that accident. He goes, when that car came to, or that truck and that car, when that crash happened, he said, that came so close to me. It hit my service revolver. And he said, and it just like whizzed past me. He goes, I can’t believe we survived. And that was another time as I was up against that retaining wall and that car stopped and I was not smashed. I felt the peace that surpasses all understanding. And I felt the presence of the Lord. And when you feel that. Like my friend lost her son. He was a Marine and he, you know, he died. He was 19. She felt it. So she wrote a book and she’s like, I want people to know that when you know he’s real, you know he’s real. But people who don’t know the Lord, they’re like, well, what do you mean, Angie? So I told him and we were on set in a commercial break. So there was only so much I could get in there. But I kind of went out on a limb and told him. And he just kind of took it in. You know, he just couldn’t believe that. Like, I don’t know that I believed in God. So I wanted him to know why.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right, exactly, exactly. Well, you know, what I ask people, in fact, amazingly, I just spent three hours this past Sunday witnessing to a young man who’s coming out of atheism. He’s not yet a believer, but he is coming out of atheism. And what I usually find is very helpful sometimes is I will ask people the question, Well, before we talk about why I believe in God, tell me why you don’t. Oh, that’s good. Because oftentimes, Angie, when you find out the God they describe, that’s not the God we believe in either. So they say, well, I just don’t believe in a God that doesn’t care about babies dying or whatever. And I say, well, I don’t believe in that God either. And so you’ll find out so many times the God that they don’t believe in is a caricature of the God that we do believe in. And so that’s kind of where I always start with people. And then the second thing I’ll always say is that when people say, you know, I don’t believe in God, I ask the question now, are you telling me you know there is no God or you don’t know whether there is or not? And usually they will say, well, you know, nobody knows for sure. I don’t know there’s not us. Well, now we’re getting somewhere. You’re an agnostic. And then I’ll always say this. Now, are you an honest agnostic or a dishonest agnostic? What do you mean? Well, an honest agnostic says, I don’t know whether there’s a God or not, but I’m willing to find out. A dishonest agnostic says, I don’t know whether there’s a God or not, and I don’t want to know. Where are you? Because if they say, I don’t want to know, then the conversation is over. Right. I can’t do it. But if they say, no, I want to know, well, then you’re off to the races.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. Yes, exactly. And so in this, you said three hours. Did you say you spoke with him? How did that go?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, you know what’s amazing? Here was the one thing he couldn’t get past. He could not get past the Trinity. He believes in God. That is what we would call God the Father. But he just cannot get over the Trinitarian God that we believe in, that he’s one God in three persons. And so anyway, long story short, I took him through all of these scriptures where Jesus is called God. First of all, he declared he was God. He accepted worship. But his own brother, you know, his own disciple Peter in 2 Peter 1, 1 refers to him as our God and Savior. Timothy, Paul does the same thing in Timothy. As you well know, Thomas, the doubting disciple, called him my Lord and my God. And he could not deny that. He couldn’t really disbelieve it. He just could not grasp it and get over it. But where we left it was he is reading the Gospel of John, a chapter a day. He’s investigating who Jesus is. He wants to meet with me again. So I really believe, hopefully and prayerfully, he’s going to come to faith.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m excited. I would love to have you come back after that and see how that goes. I don’t know. What a cool calling. I want to ask you, if you’re just joining us, Dr. James Merritt is talking to us about the God who hears. I want to ask you about… A lot of people don’t feel that God hears or they feel silence in their prayer life. The only way that I am able to really focus well enough to hear prayers is when I’m journaling. That works for me because I can kind of quiet my mind. And when I reread it, I feel like things are written in a way that isn’t my terminology. And I’ll read something back and I’m like, that’s not how I would say that. And I really do feel like moved by the power of God when I’m journaling. But when I’m just sitting there, you know, I’ve got friends who are just prayer warriors that they talk to me every day about, you know, well, you know, one of them just moved to Georgia, in fact. And I’m like, you’re moving again? And she’s like, well, I just feel called to work for this ministry down in Georgia. And I just feel the Lord, that’s where the Lord wants me right now. And she’s moved like five times since her husband passed away, working for these different ministries. And I’m like, I’ve never heard God say, well, now get a U-Haul. you know, and get everything packed up. I should sell the couch. You know, I mean, she gets like, I feel like very specific answers. So what do you tell people who feel like silence from God in their prayer life?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, first of all, there’s a word that I caution people about using, and too much especially, and that’s the word feelings. First, we don’t even live our life, a lot of our life, based on feelings. I mean, I’ve been married 48 years. Do I feel at times that Teresa loves me more than other times? Yes. But it doesn’t mean that she loves me any more or less. it just means that’s the way i feel number two god does not deal with us based on feelings god deals with us based on fact number three god does speak to us every day but it’s not the way we would want him to no he doesn’t speak out loud he speaks louder than that he speaks in his word and if you’re if you’re really truly reading the word of god under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will rarely ever go a day that you don’t read your Bible. You do not hear God speak. The last thing I would say is I really caution people. I never say God told me. Anything. What I do say is I feel impressed. I felt impressed by the Lord. Or I feel like that God in my heart spoke to me and I felt led to do something. The last thing I would say is, is that, you know, I told somebody this the other day. I think there are times in our lives when we have options and we have and we do. And I think that whatever option we choose at the end of the day, you’re not going to fool God. He already knows which one you’re going to choose anyway. And I think sometimes we sweat and fret, well, should I go to Georgia or should I go to Florida? Should I go to the University of Maine or the University of Connecticut? Well, at the end of the day, all other things are equal, and they both have excellent programs in what you want to major in. And if you’re going there to serve the Lord, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, I really want to go to blank. Okay, God will honor that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 03 :
What do you think? We’ve got about three minutes left. This might be a big question to ask you. But, you know, our society right now, it’s so complicated. And there’s a lot of, you know, when you throw in politics and other things, religion, etc. Why do you think or what do you think of our society in terms of? rejecting authority and maybe being headed for trouble. Like, I know it’s kind of a broad question, but I feel like there’s a lot going on right now. And it bums me out when people hate each other over something. So like, unfriend me if you believe in this politics wise, like family members, you know, writing off other family members. Like, I would never reject someone for their political views unless they were a Nazi or something. You know what I mean? Like, I’m not going to get rid of a family member because they believe they’re a Democrat or I’m a Republican or vice versa. I wouldn’t just… But people are doing that left and right now, and I don’t remember that when I was younger, that happening to this degree.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Well, the simple answer is what Abraham Lincoln said, and that is we have forgotten God. When you are not right vertically, how can you expect to be right horizontally? And while I’m in the neighborhood, let me just jump on one thing. I don’t understand it. I told our church this Sunday, you know, people say, I just can’t believe the way these students have been protesting and the way they’ve been acting and the anti-Semitism. And people who go to college and you think are educated and intelligent, I just can’t believe it. And I say, I don’t even understand why you’re surprised. If you don’t understand that in the last 50 or 60 years, we have been in overdrive of getting rid of God everywhere we can, in the government, in the school. We’ve done everything we can to destroy the nuclear family, to destroy the unit that God said is the foundation of civilization, which is a mom and a dad and kids. When you put those things together and then you have, even in homes that have parents, absentee parents who have advocated both their spiritual responsibility to lead their children to come to know God and their moral responsibility to discipline and correct them when they’re wrong, what else can you expect? So what I think you’re seeing, for example, at a Columbia University or whatever, we are reaping what we have sown, plain and simple. We’ve sown the wind. Now we’re reaping the whirlwind.
SPEAKER 03 :
