Patty is known as the Duchess of Decorum by her one million TikTok followers and is a leading financial expert. Welcome, Patty.

All right. So I love this because when I lived in Los Angeles many years ago, probably 25, I had a big group of girlfriends. We worked at all the news stations around town. I worked at NBC and we would like go places together to these like events where maybe we’d sign a picture or whatever. And we were all reading one book, Getting to I Do by Pat Allen. And this reminds this is a financially wiser version of Pat Allen.
SPEAKER 09 :
It absolutely is. And I love Pat Allen, by the way. I love her. But this book is so needed. I mean, it just came out yesterday. And within 12 hours, it was the number one new release for dating and number four for finance on Amazon. I mean, I’m still in shock. And, no, I wrote it because I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people, especially women, aren’t financially independent. And my mother inspired me. Because she didn’t have the money to leave a difficult situation, and it cost her everything, including her life.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, wow.
SPEAKER 09 :
And, yeah, and I wanted to honor her, and I wanted to use her story as a catalyst for change so no other woman suffers like she did. And in her day to broke dude, I’m going to teach you how to make your bag, grow your bag, and most importantly, how to keep it.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right, so let’s talk about, you know, how do you – I think it would be pretty easy, but how do you identify the broke dude?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I’m so glad you asked this question. A broke dude isn’t just about money. It’s mindset. It’s someone regardless of gender or income who can’t or won’t match your ambition, commitment, or work ethic or drive, okay? And like my dude who was eating Cheetos on the sofa while I was out hustling, I mean, I love Cheetos too, but you’ve got to have a job to pay for those Cheetos. And I want to teach women to spot these signs early so they can make better choices, unlike I did. And I always say, you don’t have to match me dollar for dollar, but you do have to match me hustle for hustle.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, I love that. And also one thing my husband told the kids, and it’s kind of hilarious. It’s not very romantic. They said, I know your mom’s good looking and she’s successful and everything, but I never would have dated your mom if she wasn’t so financially savvy and wasn’t such a good saver. And I’m like, oh, so romantic. romantic but he says you guys you don’t date people that don’t save like you do you don’t date people we always say like never date a D student and we’re not saying that because we think every D students a loser we’re saying it because it’s representative of whether or not he will make a good living later on we’re trying to get someone who like you said matches the hustle right it matches your energy you know it’s so not hot for you to be out there hustling well you know he or she isn’t doing anything Oh, so true. All right. So what about guidelines for, you know, dealing with finance and relationships? Because a lot of times people don’t, you know, really they’re not forthcoming. But I think it’s pretty easy to start figuring out whether or not they’re late on their rent, whether they’re paid for their car, whether they’re making their car payments. Also, whether they’re just a financial idiot buying, you know, some car that’s way over their means and living in a trailer. I mean, no offense to trailers, but you’re not driving a Ferrari if you’re living in a trailer.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right, and it’s all show and no go. I’ve seen those people, and those people with Ferraris typically don’t have a pot to pee in. I’m telling you. So in Never Date or Broke, dude, we have an entire section on navigating money and relationships. I talk about who should pay the bills, how to spot signs of financial abuse, prenups, financial boundaries, what everyone should know about their family’s finances, even the receipts you need to keep in case something happens. But the most important thing, Angie, and I think you’ll agree with this, is Keep your eyes open. You don’t want to end up like my friend in the book who thought that they were rich, but they were actually broke as a joke because her husband had gambled away their entire fortune.
SPEAKER 11 :
You know, I think, you know, I can already foresee because you’re so active on social media, Patty, that people are going to be like, oh, this is a book for gold diggers. No, it’s not. It’s a book for men or women. It’s saying like, look, find someone who’s equally yoked when it comes to finances and and drive and possibly education but you know that that that’s a little bit more um loose and easy depending on how well they’re navigating their lives but it’s not about being a gold digger it’s about taking care of your life and it’s so funny because we have three teenagers and we’ve been talking about this lately and even with my son they’re like is this a person who’s taking another gap year and you’re running your own business since you were 12 and you’re 19 now and you’re buying your own home is someone who’s taking an additional gap year who’s working like a tanning salon, you know, and just see, okay, okay. I had to really cover this conversation carefully, though. I said, and also only working 20 hours a week. I’m like, a gap year is not about working, you know, for 20 hours a week. A gap year is about either traveling or getting an education, trying out different courses to see what area of expertise you might want to focus on. Like, find someone who has similar, you know, goals to you. That’s what it’s about. It’s not about being a gold digger.
SPEAKER 09 :
No, absolutely. And one thing people don’t understand is Who you choose as your partner is the most important financial decision you will ever make. People think it’s about finding the one emotionally. Oh, we’re in love. But financially, it can either launch your dreams or destroy them. I mean, when I dated my broke dude, he left me with $30,000 in debt and a broken heart. And he wasn’t even that cute, you know. And Never Date a Broke Dude is about making just smart choices.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 09 :
You don’t want to just survive. You want to thrive. And it’s really, like you said, not about being a gold digger, but it’s about being a gold, G-O-A-L digger. That’s different.
SPEAKER 11 :
I love that. I love that. Hey, in addition to the book, how did you get such a big following on social media?
SPEAKER 09 :
Oh, it’s not easy, and anyone who tells you it is, it’s not. When I started, it was about five years ago, and I would post three videos a day, okay, for a month. So that’s 100 videos a month I would post. So you have to be consistent. You have to do it on a daily basis. But the most important thing is that you have to provide information that people don’t already know. You have to provide value to your audience. That is the only way you’re going to get a good following.
SPEAKER 11 :
You know, I wonder, Patty, if you’re first of all, I know you’re from Iran. So is my stepmom and my best friend. So, yeah, yeah. Suffice it to say that I’m a big fan of the food. But I think that maybe just like my best friend, she came at the same age you did at seven. I think sometimes even my background growing up really poor. My mom worked at a factory, had nothing. And again, had a hard time leaving my dad because he was a professor there. so she didn’t really have a means to really support us. So with that said, do you think because of your humble background that it made you even – because I see people go either way, like they all of a sudden make some money and they’re spending it all, or they kind of grew up humble or even in my case just plain poor, and then you just never want to go back there again. Did that really have an impact on you because of your humble beginnings?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yes, absolutely. I mean, when we were in Iran, like most people and probably your friends, I mean, we were well off, because if you’re not well off, you can’t make it to the U.S., right? But once we got here, the skills didn’t translate. So my parents couldn’t find jobs in their respective fields, so we had nothing. I grew up with nothing, Angie. I started working when I was 10 years old, and I’ve never, ever stopped. And I think one important factor for me is that I didn’t want to let my current situation be my final destination, right? I always wanted more for myself, and my parents always pushed me to want more. And, you know, Cher says that she’s like, I’ve been rich, I’ve been poor, rich is better. So I never want to go back there ever again.
SPEAKER 11 :
So if you’re – I totally agree. In fact, when I go back, I drive back by my old – my son’s 19. We’re buying a house. I’m going to look at it today. He’s buying a house, I should say. But I always drive by our low-income housing where they have, like, towels hanging in the window or sheets for curtains.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
And it’s just a great reality check for me that my son now, the way that we’ve helped set him up is by Boulder, Colorado, where he goes to school. This is like a California priced city that my kid at 19 could be buying a house. And I’m driving by my place where sheets are hanging in the window for curtains. I mean, it almost makes me want to cry just thinking about how I’ve set like you. I started working seven days a week at 16 and I never stopped. I think that when we set our families up for a better future, it’s so fulfilling. So what if you like telling your own kids or young people you meet, what are like the top three things you say when they pick your brain?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, the first thing is be your own prince. Stop waiting for someone to come and emotionally or financially. Build the life you want now because it gives you options, safety, and power. That is the most important thing. Next one is everyone in a relationship should be financially independent. You need to have your own separate bank account where your paycheck goes into. You can have a joint account for family expenses, but that’s about it. And lastly, you need to start investing for your future. If you’re in your 20s and if you start investing $100 a month, that’s it. By the time you retire, you’re going to have $600,000. $200 a month is going to give you over a million bucks. So investing is the quickest way to become a millionaire.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, my gosh. No wonder you’re so popular on social media. How did you come up with the Duchess of Decorum?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, when I first started, I was teaching people how to act because it was like during COVID and no one knew how to act, how to eat, what you should wear to work, what you should say at work, you know, those types of things. So I started teaching decorum and it kind of included finance. But then I just morphed it into finance because I think decorum is a nice to know, but finance is a must know.
SPEAKER 11 :
I’ll let your family so proud. I mean, it’s so neat that you’re doing this to honor your mom. I think that’s so cool.
SPEAKER 09 :

What’s next for you?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, I guess we’ll see what happens. I mean, I still have my day job, so I’m still in mergers and acquisitions, but I would love to just spread my message all around the country and just go and speak to people and teach them the importance of financial independence, but most importantly, how to get there and how to keep it.

You bet. So I really liked that interview because I’ve been talking to my kids a lot about just finding someone similar to you in their ambition, their faith, their education, their desires. Now, I know that doesn’t always happen. But I think you are set up more for success if you have someone who saves in a similar manner to yourself, is invested in investing in the future, has similar hopes and dreams for what kind of life that they want to create. We talk about being equally yoked in the faith department. And I think, though, that also transitions over equally yoked in other manners as well. Now, I understand that like a hugely successful businessman may want a woman who’s well educated, but who wants to stay home and raise the kids. I know that there are some variables that come into play here. And like, for instance, I stay home a lot more now than I did, you know, when I was younger. However, I think that I think that. When my husband and I got married, the fact that I was good with my money, that was a big deal to him, as I mentioned in the interview. And I did date someone in my 20s that was not nearly as driven as I was and had a lot more financial difficulties. And wasn’t finishing school. And once you get towards 30 and you want to have a family, if you have someone that can’t really financially support themselves, hasn’t finished their education and doesn’t have like a career, even anywhere near yours, it started to become a problem. And we did it for years. And then finally, after we dated for years, I think it was like a wake up call to him to finish school and get a career. I wasn’t looking for someone who was loaded. I was just looking for someone who could support themselves well and had ambition. So I just wanted to say all that because I think it’s important. It’s not a gold digger thing. That’s why I was stressing that with the author. It is a sensible thing to find someone similar to yourself in what they desire for their life, their future, their family. All right, that’s all. I love to highlight good news stories and like reading the odd stories. And I get a lot of those in the authors that I get to interview. And I’ve got some great ones coming up this week as well. Hopefully I can get them all in this week. Sometimes I have to save one for the following week, but Oh, I’ve got one that’ll blow your mind. I’m just going to give you a little teaser on that guy because he is Dr. Pastor, pardon me, Larry Huck, Pastor Larry Huck. And his book has to do with, well, from junkie to Jerusalem. How he was a drug addict and just a throwaway life. And now he has a daily Christian TV show and he’s written numerous books. And this really is his testimony. So I’m going to give him the whole show later in the week because he’s just so motivational. I mean, when I did my pre-interview with him. I just basically sat and listened to him for half an hour. Yeah, I barely – I said, oh, my goodness. Oh, no. Oh, this should be a movie. I mean it was just – yeah. Some of these – some people’s lives – and everybody has a story. But some people’s lives just blow me away. And so that is the good news story I’m going to tell you about right now. One of my favorite reporters is Steve Hartman from CBS News. I used to – he does On the Road with Steve Hartman. And he used to work across town from him. I think I told you this when I worked at NBC for in Los Angeles, he worked at CBS, the local there in LA. And, uh, I went over to him at the Emmys once and just told him I really love the work he does, and he’s kind of humble, and he’s like, oh, thanks. He wasn’t like real – like he’s just humble, and he’s very nice, and I’ve interviewed him a few times as well. So this story – he’s done two stories on this guy, but recently Pope Francis passed away, and this had a lot to do with Pope Francis because something Pope Francis gave to this man, Bruno Serrato – Really has inspired him. And I just love stories when people make such a difference in life and they use their lives to help others like Jim Stovall. You know, you just heard from him in the first segment. He says every year when they’re giving out their scholarships to kids. that he wants to see the next kid in line to get a scholarship that didn’t get a scholarship. Why does he want to see the kid that didn’t get a scholarship? So that he can be inspired for the next year to earn even more money for these scholarships. And then Charles Barkley the other day, I was listening to an interview with him, an old interview, saying that big cars and the big houses don’t matter. What matters is how can I impact other people? How can I help people? How can I educate kids that can make a difference in people’s lives? And Bruno Serrato is such a prime example of that. So I won’t go on too long. I want you to hear the story from CBS’s Steve Hartman because he has such a moving way of telling the story of Chef Serato who lost his restaurant in a fire, but from the ashes came something wonderful.

Using the proceeds from his restaurant, Bruno treated the kids at the local Boys and Girls Club to a fine dining experience. Every night he did this. Later, he expanded his charity. Is it cool? To feed and house the homeless. Over the years, he has helped hundreds of thousands of people. And Bruno says what has kept him going. Through the fire, the rebuilding, and all the financial strain. was Pope Francis, who he met four times. On the last visit, Pope Francis told him this.
