In this heartfelt episode, Angie Austin speaks with Grace Fox, author of ‘Finding Hope in Crisis’, as they explore profound themes from her book. The conversation delves into Grace’s upcoming humanitarian mission in Egypt, where she and her team aim to inspire hope among Sudanese refugee children through education and spiritual encouragement. The dialogue touches on the challenges faced by these young girls, their need for warmth during the chilly Egyptian winters, and the gift of peace and faith that Grace plans to share.
SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome to The Good News with Angie Austin. Now, with The Good News, here’s Angie.
SPEAKER 07 :
Hello, friend, Angie Austin and Grace Fox with The Good News. Today we’re talking about her book, Finding Hope in Crisis, Devotions for Calm and Chaos. And we are talking about page 132, and this devotion is titled, Jesus Prays for You. Hey, Grace, how are you? I’m doing well, thank you, Angie. Oh, hey, I wanted to ask you, we’re talking about Jesus Praise Free, but I wanted to ask you, aren’t you headed to Egypt?
SPEAKER 06 :
I am. I am.
SPEAKER 07 :
Tell me about that.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, so we are taking off for Egypt to attend our staff conference. They have a staff conference there for our Middle Eastern co-workers every other year, and it’s been a while since we’ve been able to go. So this year, the whole conference will be held in Arabic, and there will be translation into English, which is which is really going to be fun for us, so to be a part of being on the translation end of it, because usually conferences are held in English, and there are translators for the other languages that are present in the room, but it’s going to be the other way. And then at the end of that conference, we will be, when I say we, I mean Jane and I and another couple from the States, co-workers from our U.S. office, and two of our Egyptian couples are going to co-host a one-day Christmas event for We’re hoping about 80 Sudanese refugee teenage girls and Egyptian girls ages 14 to 18. And we’re very excited about that. So they’ve asked me to present. Let’s do a little presentation on the names of God and show these girls how God is present for them, how he sees them, and how he offers them the gift of peace. So some of these girls have recently placed their faith in Christ. But many of them just have not heard the good news yet. And so it’s going to be quite a wonderful opportunity to bring hope to these kids who have seen way too much in their young years.
SPEAKER 07 :
So how common is it for people to be Christians in Egypt?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, you know, there’s those that are Islamic, but then there is the Orthodox community. And so there’s two different, I don’t know if you want categories of Christianity, I guess you might want to call it. There’s the Orthodox Church, and then there’s the evangelical believers. And the majority of the population would be the Orthodox Church, but they don’t teach about Jesus being our Savior and God wanting a personal relationship with us. It’s more about… Obeying the religious rules and you’ve got to strive to earn God’s favor and don’t be presumptuous about his forgiveness. And so, yeah, definitely the minority population would be evangelical believers.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, that is interesting. Okay, that’s good to know. So, you know, you get to travel so many countries and, you know, work with so many people with your ministry. It’s interesting to see, you know, what you get to do. So when you’re speaking to these girls who are like middle school or just under high school age, it’s a pretty influential time for them. And as you mentioned, in a country where, you know, they could use some hope and they’ve seen, you know, more than the average 13, 14-year-old girl, that’s quite an opportunity. I’ll bet you’re pretty excited about that.
SPEAKER 06 :
I am. And, you know, when we think about them, as you mentioned, there would be, say, middle school-age girls. It’s easy for us to think of them in comparison to that, but some of these girls have never attended school, and some are illiterate. So they’ve never had the opportunity to go to school because they’ve lived in Sudan. All they’ve known is war. And so for us to be able to have access to them is quite something. Their families have fled to Cairo. This is where they will be when we meet with them. Some of them don’t have families, and they probably got there just with a group of people fleeing for their lives. But we have staff there that have started a school for these refugee children from the Sudan. And so they have found these kids there. and brought them in and are involving them in an educational process because that brings a better future for them as well. So, yeah, it’s quite exciting. It’s way different. You know, these kids’ lives are a universe different than the kids their age on our side of the world are.
SPEAKER 07 :
Wow, that really puts it in perspective that some of them came alone and fled the war in Sudan and are there without any family, illiterate, they’ve never gone to school, and then your ministry setting up a school there to educate them, and then you getting an opportunity to talk to them about the names of God and to give them hope. I mean, that’s super cool.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I’m really excited.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
We did some fundraising here and so we’re going to be able to supply these kids with warm hats because they’re cold in Egypt now in the winter. They don’t have inside heating like we know here either. So it gets very cold in the buildings at night. And so they’ve come from the Sudan where it’s even hotter than Egypt and they’re cold. So we’ll supply them all with warm hats and scarves, gloves, a shirt, and then some fun things like I’m taking over a little necklace for everybody and we’ll have a little bag of
SPEAKER 07 :
Christmas sweets and that type of thing so yeah we just want to bless them well so with a whole day a whole day with these kids just loving on them okay so that that part is wonderful and how excited they’re going to be to get you know a warm hat I know how that makes a difference for me because I hate to be cold that I love to wear hats but the um how how do you deal with like do you ever feel overwhelmed with the sadness of what they’ve experienced or does God kind of equip you for that
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s really hard for my mind to comprehend the sadness of what they’ve experienced. And so I could just ask God to help me see them through his eyes. And that is the one thing that I can do to try to understand the specifics. I can’t. I can’t even pretend to. But, yeah, it’s hard. It’s harder for me when I come back because I leave them. I leave them and I come back into my… comfortable existence. But I can’t just fix it for them. Thankfully, we’ve got our staff on the other end that can do what they can do. But in every situation, some of these people are dealing with stuff that our staff, as well-meaning as they are, they can’t fix it either.
SPEAKER 07 :
Now, do some of these kids ever share with you some of their circumstances or, you know, if they’re alone and don’t have family or what they’ve gone through, do some of them have time to speak with some of them? Or is it more you sharing to them about, you know, the hope that’s in the good news?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, we’ll have time for them to share with us if they want.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Well, I can’t wait to hear, you know, when you get back, of course, we’ll do our interview when you get back. And I definitely want to just focus on that for a whole segment. All right. Today, we’re let’s say, well, good luck with that. I’ll be praying for you because I know you’re leaving very soon. And again, we’re talking about one of Grace’s books, Finding Hope in Crisis. And we’re talking about the devotion Jesus prays for you. So what are you teaching us today?
SPEAKER 06 :
This one just brings so much hope to me, Angie. In Romans 8, verse 34, it says, Who then will condemn us? No one. For Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us. And he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. And there are times, maybe you have felt this way too, where you are in the middle of a situation where you haven’t got a clue how to pray. All you can mutter is, Jesus, help, or sometimes just the name of Jesus, repeating it over and over. Because at the name of Jesus, you know, demons will flee. But to know that in those situations where life is so hard and the circumstance is so uncertain that we don’t know how to pray, that Jesus is praying for us. He never takes a hiatus. Like, he’s there. That’s one of his roles, sitting at the Father’s right hand, praying for us. And that should bring us great encouragement.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it should. I agree. And, you know, especially as you’re going on this big, you know, trip. And I think that sometimes when we don’t know what to pray, you talk in the ponder section about what is your greatest prayer concern today? What is your greatest prayer concern today? And I’ve been praying for two friends who – or having surgery today, one just for fun, if you know what I mean, and then the other one for colon cancer, which is obviously not just for fun, but caught early, thank goodness. And by the way, I’m telling you this, colonoscopies, as much as people don’t like them, if you don’t want to get colon cancer, boy, they can definitely, that’s one that is, you can stop it in its tracks. If you get those on time, you can definitely find the polyps and not have colon cancer, even if it runs in your family. So just a little side note on that. So after your ponder, what is your greatest prayer concern today, you say, and then your pray section says, Jesus, thank you for knowing my greatest prayer concern, even if I don’t voice it. So talk a little bit about that.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, sometimes I think we don’t, oh, there may be times when we don’t want to share our prayer concern with anybody else because, one, it may be so, so hard that we don’t even know how to put it into words. Another might be it’s so personal, we’re ashamed. Like there’s shame involved in it. There’s something that’s happened to us or that we’ve done. We don’t want anybody else to know because what would they think of us? And so we don’t voice it to anybody else either. But Jesus knows those things and we don’t have to try to sugarcoat them or wear the false mask because he gets it. He sees it and he prays for us in those things. And again, there’s just such encouragement in knowing that.
SPEAKER 07 :
You usually give us a quote from a book and talk about the one. I’m not familiar with this author. So will you read us that one at the bottom of the next page?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I just love it. It’s by Robert Murray McShane. And he said, if I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me. So isn’t that neat? Like I I’m sitting here in my boat. My husband is in another room. I’ve just got the door shut between us. And I, you know, I could say if I knew that my husband, or if I could hear him praying out loud for me, just on the other side of that door, that would give me great courage and great confidence and assurance that he’s got my back. And the same, this is what this Robert Murray McShane is saying is if I, if I could hear Jesus, Praying for me in the next room. I wouldn’t fear a million enemies. But the truth is, you know, we can’t hear Jesus praying for us. But he is still. He’s in heaven praying for us in distance. Doesn’t make a difference. We can have that same kind of assurance, that same kind of courage and confidence and not fear a million enemies when we know that Jesus is in heaven praying for us right now, this very minute, no matter what that greatest prayer concern is or what caused it. It doesn’t matter. He’s got it.
SPEAKER 07 :
And, you know, it’s interesting to me, you know, you talk about in the devotion, you know, you mentioned that it was a couple months into the pandemic lockdown. And in your newsletter, you asked your subscribers, you know, you were really passionate. honest about your sadness. Um, and you asked them, um, basically we’re honest with them. And then they wrote to you and they’re praying for you. They emailed you and you were really touched by that. And I think so many of us don’t reach out to others and don’t, like you said, voice our prayer needs. And, you know, speaking of this, um, friend, I say friend of mine that today I just learned about her colon cancer surgery, um, over, um, uh, Facebook. And, um, And I say friend, but this is someone that I met just like you through my radio show. She and her husband came into studio and we were talking about the loss of their nine-year-old son. It was in an accident. And we did this interview. This was several years after he passed. And we did this interview probably 12 or 13 years ago. And they’ve come in studio twice. And here… She voiced this today. I haven’t seen her in person in over a decade, and I’m praying for her today. And you reached out as well to people that you may have never met or haven’t seen in a very long time. And their story touched me so much about their son, Quinton. I still remember his name. And they’d stop because of a flat tire or something. And he was in between the trailer and their vehicle and the girl that hit them. She was like 19. She fell asleep and he basically got hit in between the two and the kid died immediately. And just the way that they’ve lived, you know, with their faith and to honor their son. was so touching to me that he or she reached out as well so i guess our lesson today is when you do need prayer don’t also be afraid to ask others and we’ll be praying for you grace as you head to egypt gracefox.com god bless you brandon good luck on your trip thank you angie

Hello there, friend. Angie Austin here with the good news. Well, I don’t really think I should let the cat out of the bag, but he probably already knows. Don’t call them. They’re totally not into you. Don’t even call them. They’re not your friend. Don’t call that person. Yeah, you’re the diamond. If they really want to date you, they’re going to make the effort. You don’t need to make the effort. Of course, we say that to our girls for sure. Love it.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 07 :
So I married a skinnier Bob Guinea, I think, really. I like it.
SPEAKER 05 :
I like it. I like hearing that. And I like that he’s a pencil with hair, that kind of old school thing. You could go like this and it would – be all tussled about. That’s that sounds good. Yes.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes. All right. So we’ve got the Black Friday and the Cyber Monday deals coming up. So what deals do you think we should really be keeping our eyes open for?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, you know, I remember when Black Friday was a day and Cyber Monday was a day. Well, now it’s like a month, right? Everybody’s got their deals going forever. And I love it. And I think that right now, you know, one of the things that have really been affected by those Black Friday and Cyber Monday months are that electronics have become more affordable, in particular televisions. This TV behind me is unbelievable. It’s a 98-inch TCL QM7K4K TV, and it’s only $19.99. I remember when buying a TV was like buying a car. Yeah. It’s $2,000 off its normal price. It’s got the QD Mini LED series. It ranges in size from 55 inches all the way up to 115 inches. That’s like a small movie screen. delivers ultra-wide viewing angles, deep blacks, super bright halo-free pictures. For gamers, for people who love video games, this automatically-enabled game mode gives the lowest possible input lag and latency. I don’t even know what those terms mean, but I know it’s unmatched gaming performance. It’s just crazy. It’s like you have this enormous television with the most… bright, vivid picture you could possibly imagine. And it’s definitely a steal.
SPEAKER 1 :
1999.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know, I’m thinking about that because we’re doing one of those ADUs. We’re turning a garage basically into another house on a rental property. My kid goes to college at CU Boulder. And so anyway, I’m thinking about putting something like that in the wall and we want to go really high end because these kids have so many choices. And I thought, boy, if you put that in like kind of a a rock wall or a bricked wall or like, you know, the material you use for a fireplace and you put a TV like that in it. I mean, that takes it high end like immediately.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, it really does. I mean, it is a, it is essentially a movie screen. I mean, there’s no question. It’s the most vivid, great picture. I mean, it’s just absolutely awesome. And it’s a smart TV. So you’ve got all the access to the apps and everything else right there at your fingertips.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, cool. All right. How about a gift that you think that many people will have on the old wish list this year?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, I’m a big tablet guy. As you know, I got a six-year-old and a four-year-old, and I’m not too proud to tell you when we’re at dinner, I’m putting a tablet in their hands so that I can at least get through my first course. The TCL’s Next Paper 11 Plus tablet, 70% off retail, only $259.99. This Android tablet has an 11.5-inch display that delivers a paper-like feel. Advanced Eye Comfort. It’s the three-in-one VersaView mode. I mean, this is just unbelievable. It lets you switch between vibrant visuals for streaming. Ink paper mode for an e-reader-like display, while the color paper mode is perfect for reading comics and magazines. Such a cool gift. And then the next one, this is one that people don’t think they want, but I promise you they need it. We’ve all got hundreds of online accounts. We’ve all got hackers trying to rope us into things with phishing and everything else. The YubaKey from Yubico. This takes away the headache of online security. It’s a physical security key that protects your accounts by adding an extra layer of security beyond just a username and password. It’s two-factor authentication. This takes one simple touch of this key. It’s a physical key. No need for batteries, mobile connectivity, no more copying and pasting passcodes. And without physical access to your YubiKey, hackers cannot get into your stuff. Plain and simple. Save 30% off the YubiKey 5 NFC and YubiKey 5 CFD November 24th through December 1st on Yubico.com. This is the gift that everyone should be getting this Christmas, this holiday. Make sure you’re giving it to people even though they don’t know they want it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Excellent. Yeah, give it to people even though they don’t even know they want it. Perfect. I love that. Who wouldn’t want a gift like that? Are you kidding me? All right. Let’s talk about your strategy, because we all have this person that’s hard to shop for person. And you can’t just keep getting him a tie or like nail polish or perfume every year or whatever. Right. Right. So what’s your strategy for the hard to shop for people?
SPEAKER 05 :
I’ve got about pretty much everyone on my list is a hard to shop for person. So I’m looking at their hobbies. I’m looking at what do they do when they’re not at work or they’re not at school? What do they do? If you’ve got a crafter on your list, someone who likes to make things, who wants to have a personal touch, check out Cricut. You can create everything from festive candle vases, personalized throw pillows, holiday shirts for the whole family. Starting November 23rd, Cricut Joy Extras are $129 and Cricut Explore 4s are $199. It’s some of the best savings of the year. And you can join a community of crafters with their Design Space platform. So you have access to thousands of images, fonts, ready-to-make projects. And it allows them to kind of put their personal touch on something. And then you might actually get a cool gift out of it, too, because they do all the crafting and then they give it back to you as a present. So, you know, there’s a little self-serving in here for me.
SPEAKER 07 :
I love it when you give someone a gift and you can go, by the way, I would like you to make me something. Or like the other day I gave the dorm mom like 20 cupcakes and like I wanted to hand them to her personally because I wanted one.
SPEAKER 05 :
Exactly. Or you’re like, you know, I could really use a nice gifting, a nice vase for my flower. So, you know, you can make one right here.
SPEAKER 07 :
I love that. Those cricket things are amazing. I think they’re so great to work with.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, I started getting into this. I’m really enjoying it. I’m enjoying what I can do with this thing.
SPEAKER 07 :
Follow him on Instagram. You can get ideas from people who are a lot smarter than we are.
SPEAKER 05 :
I will definitely take your advice on that. I love it. All right. And then another great gift idea. This one’s great for anyone who likes music or likes a cocktail. Either way. And it can be a mocktail, a cocktail, whatever it might be. But this will let you bring your party up a notch. Booze and Vinyl Country. It’s the latest installment from Andre Darlington’s best-selling booze and vinyl series. This is a listening party guide with an incredible collection of groundbreaking music paired with mood-setting cocktails. So the albums that are in booze and vinyl country are organized chronologically in three chapters. We got toe tappers, we got unwind, we got coming home. So for instance, you want to host a garage party, Obviously, it’s Clint Black’s album Killing Time with a whiskey drink. You want a Christmas gathering? Perfect sense. Carrie Underwood with some eggnog. Whatever it might be, we’ve got the perfect pairing for the music selection that you want to have with the cocktail slash mocktail selection that you like to have. It’s a great coffee table book. It’s a great conversation starter. And it’s great for the holidays for anybody who likes music and having a beverage. So there you go. We got something for everybody here.
SPEAKER 07 :
I love that. I’d get it for my mother-in-law, but after two drinks, one of my kids has to help her in the restroom. So maybe I’ll save that for someone else.
SPEAKER 05 :
You’ll give that one to someone else because nobody really wants to help anybody to the restroom.
SPEAKER 08 :
Grandma’s like, hey, kids, can one of you walk me over there? All right. So you have one more, don’t you?
SPEAKER 05 :
No, no, that’s all we got for today. But I mean, we can keep on talking. I don’t want to go anywhere.
SPEAKER 07 :
But wait, the funniest visual is, you know how Frankenstein walks, you know, like real stiff. So when one of my kids was helping grandma at the restaurant to the restroom, grandma stood in front of her and then she faced grandma and my daughter walked backwards. So they look like some really stiff, odd dance, slowly walking to the bathroom. And that’s why I was like, no, no, no, this isn’t right. I’m like, you’re supposed to like hook her arm. You’re not supposed to go face to face and walk backwards.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s interesting. I mean, maybe she just really wanted that, you know, that one-on-one time with Nana, get a little FaceTime. Who knows?
SPEAKER 08 :
She really thought Nana was going to take a fall. Oh, gosh, that’s funny. All right, Bob, where do we go for more info?
SPEAKER 05 :
All you got to do is go to dailylounge.com, and you’ll see everything we talked about today and a whole bunch more.
SPEAKER 08 :
Awesome. Thanks. Always great talking to you. You too, Angie. Have a great holiday. You too. Bye-bye.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, always a pleasure to talk to Bob. I feel like he could be my brother. He always cracks me up. All right, let’s get serious now. If you are just joining us, this is Angie Austin with the good news. And I just got three vaccinations last week, and I like to keep up on those, not just to protect myself, but also others. Did you know that an estimated one million Americans develop shingles each year? And that is why it’s an important topic, especially as we head into the holidays and, you know, maybe traveling. We may also be around a lot of relatives. So joining us today is Dr. Leonard Friedland, vice president and director of scientific affairs and public health with GSK Vaccines. Dr. Friedland is a pediatrician and a research scientist who is passionate about vaccines, therefore his position with GSK Vaccines, and also Dr. Kelsey Godderwiss, a pharmacy manager with Kroger. Welcome to both of you.
SPEAKER 04 :
Hello, I’m Dr. Leonard Friedland, Vice President and Director of Scientific Affairs and Public Health at GSK Vaccines.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, Dr. Friedland, let’s start with the basics. What is shingles and how does it affect people, specifically 50 and older?
SPEAKER 04 :
Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that’s caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus. And that virus is the same virus that causes chickenpox, a disease we know from our childhood. Now, shingles can be a painful experience. It can disrupt your life. for multiple weeks, and it can even lead to longer lasting complications in some cases. Now, why does this occur? And the predominant reason is because our immune systems weaken naturally as we age, starting around age 50, and that puts us at increased risk of developing shingles.
SPEAKER 07 :
what are some common misconceptions people may have about shingles?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, so one very common misconception is that shingles is only a disease of the older adult. But the fact is that if you’re 50 years of age and older, even if you feel young and healthy, you’re still at risk for shingles. In fact, adults 50 years of age and older are at increased risk for shingles such that one in three people over the age of 50 will develop a case of shingles during the course of their lifetime. Another misconception is that shingles is just it just isn’t common. But that was also not true because there’s an estimated one million new cases of shingles each year in the United States. So that means that it’s likely that all of us know somebody who’s had shingles.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, Dr. Goderwitz, this one’s for you. Tell us what steps can adults 50 and older take to help protect themselves from shingles?
SPEAKER 01 :
So the biggest first step is knowing who’s at risk. And with shingles, the biggest risk factor is age. 50 and older is kind of that benchmark. And anybody 50 and older has a 99% chance of already having the virus that causes shingles inside of their body. And one in three people over the age of 50 will develop shingles in their lifetime. While age is the biggest risk factor, there are also other risk factors such as asthma, COPD, chronic kidney disease, heart disease, and diabetes that can put you more at risk for vaccine-preventable diseases like shingles. So the biggest call out here is just to speak to your Kroger pharmacist to determine your risk factors and determine the best steps to help prevent a disease like shingles.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, the holidays are quickly approaching. Why is now a good time to check in and ask your pharmacist about shingles? I know that’s what I did.
SPEAKER 01 :
Absolutely. So the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is already here. You’re already in your Kroger store shopping for your family gatherings. You’re stopping by the pharmacy to get your flu vaccine. So it’s a great time to just go ahead and speak to your pharmacist while you’re there about your risk factors, including the disease of shingles. And go ahead and getting everything taken care of in one fell swoop so that when you do want to go to those holiday gatherings, you’re protecting yourself and those around you from vaccine preventable diseases.
SPEAKER 07 :
And where should people go to learn more about shingles?
SPEAKER 01 :
So you can visit Kroger.com slash health. or a website called easyvax.com, E-A-S-Y-V-A-X.com. And that will help point you into the direction of a pharmacy to where you can go and speak directly to a pharmacist about your risk factors and how to prevent diseases like shingles.
SPEAKER 07 :
Thank you to both of you, doctors. Great info. Thank you.
SPEAKER 03 :
Thank you for listening to The Good News with Angie Austin on AM670 KLTT.
