And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Words from Jesus, from which we will launch our study today, coming up from the International Gospel Hour.
SPEAKER 03 :
Hi, this is Jay Webb for International Gospel Hour. Welcome to our broadcast today. For over 90 years, Churches of Christ have proclaimed God’s Word through our broadcasts. Just ahead is another Bible-based lesson with Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour. Let’s begin.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, thank you always to our J-Web, and greetings, and hello everyone. Great having you with us for our study today here from the International Gospel Hour. You know, 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17 says, “…all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” The thought there of the word complete. Older translations say perfect. Some translations say mature. But the idea there is the scripture allows us to grow in our knowledge. And to know the truth. And to God be the glory. So let’s take the scripture and listen to our Lord today from John 8, 31-36. When Jesus said to those Jews who believed him, If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say you will be made free? Jesus answered them, Most assuredly I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin, and a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. What a joy to know the truth, friends. God-given, guaranteed, and glorified. And what is in store when one knows truth? Our study is just ahead, but first we want to share some of our work concerning the truth to all the world. And we want to share some of our work at International Gospel Hour with our Hispanic broadcast. Here is our J-Web.

And friends, please share our Spanish podcast, Christianos Fieles with Marlon Ratana. Please share that with your Spanish-speaking friends or your Hispanic ministry, wherever the case may be. Let’s talk about, you shall know the truth. You shall know the truth that delivers one from sin. Remember, Jesus said the truth would make one free. Paul in Romans 6, verses 17 and 18 says, But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. Let’s ask from the very outset. Would you rather be a slave of sin or a slave of righteousness? It’s one or the other. Which one would treat a slave or a servant better? I believe we know the answer. I mean, imagine hearing these words, You were the servant of sin. You were. Amen, and to God be the glory. You see, they obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine, the doctrine that was delivered, the teaching, the instruction. The word form means an exact image or a type. And when we think about the form of doctrine, Let’s go back just a little earlier in Romans chapter 6, verses 1 through 6, when Paul talks about, Know ye not that so many of us, as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should be raised to walk in newness of life. The parallel of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ has one dead to sin who is buried in baptism and raised to walk in a newness of life. The gospel is the good news, Romans 1 verse 16. And the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is affirmed also in 1 Corinthians 15, 1 through 4. And he tells them, This, knowing the truth, will deliver one from sin because we see the escape clause, if you will, how we are instructed. By knowing the truth and obeying the truth, the joy of salvation. In Romans 10, we also note one heard and believed the message. Romans 10, verse 14 and verse 17. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, which is truth. One realized they could not continue in sin. Romans 6 and verse 1. What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? Well, on the day of Pentecost when they were pricked in their hearts and said, Men and brethren, what shall we do? They could not continue living that way and feeling that way. And Peter said in Acts 2 and verse 38, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Just like the eunuch did when he confessed his faith that Jesus is the Son of God, Acts 8 and verse 37, they went down into the water, the element, what is used for baptism. And he was baptized, and when he came up, he went on his way rejoicing. And as we noted moments ago in Romans 6, 3 through 6, one is baptized the likeness of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, and to God be the glory. Let’s consider, second, you shall know the truth that frees one from the law of sin and death. Yes, we see the deliverance from sin, but let’s build on this a little bit. In Romans 8, verses 1 and 2, there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Let’s define the law of sin and death. Well, spiritually speaking, you sin, you die. And the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 3.23 One who is in Christ Jesus. One placed in Christ Jesus when one is baptized into Christ Jesus. And raised to walk in newness of life. There’s no condemnation to that individual any longer. They’re not walking according to the flesh as old, but according to the Spirit. Why? Because they know the truth that makes men free. One can rejoice knowing that one does not want to return to that which makes one free. Someone says, well, we all will sin, we’ll fall short. Well, written to the Christians in 1 Corinthians 1, 7-10, we note how if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin. You see, there’s a continual cleansing of His blood in our lives. And then, if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. 1 John 1, 9. Listen, friends. Many times that verse is used for individuals who are not Christians to say, okay, we confess our sins. He’s faithful and just to forgive us. But that’s not applicable to the one who is not a Christian. That verse is placed dead center to those who are already Christians, who as they walk in the light, yes, we fall short. We’re human. And we confess our sins. trusting, as we go into 1 John 2, how he is our advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous, pleading for his children and his fellow servants. You see, one is free from the law of sin and death, and we don’t want to go back breaking the law again. I’ll give you a third one. You shall know the truth that abides in the word of God. What did Jesus say in John 8, verse 31? If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. Think about what the word of God does for you and I. It helps us to live a proper example, 1 Timothy 4.12. It gives us direction to grow, 2 Peter 1.5-11. The word of God instructs us how to worship him, John 4.24. and to give one direction unto death, to walk faithful unto death, Revelation 2 and verse 10. Applying the truth in our lives keeps that renewed direction every day. Friends, as you listen to us here on International Gospel Hour, through the avenue of which you are listening, then we want you to take our broadcast to grow to know the truth, To see how it delivers one. How it keeps one free. How one can abide in the word and grow and know more about it. That’s why we are always thrilled to offer our material absolutely free.
