SPEAKER 02 :
Now guys, the Old Testament was divided up Now guys, if you have any doubt at all in regard to the validity of the Old Testament, this should take care of that. This was God himself, Jesus himself, raised from the dead, appearing to these men on the road to Emmaus, who went back and verified the fact as to who he was by going to the scriptures and showing them where he fit in all the way through the Old Testament. So if we have any doubts about the Old Testament, get rid of them. If Jesus was God, which indeed he was and is, and there was any error at all in the Old Testament, in the books of the law or the prophets or the writings, would he not have been obligated to have corrected them? Would he or not? If he was God and he was full of grace and what? Truth, then would he have not been obligated to correct error if there was error in the Old Testament? So we know something about our scriptures. The Bible is not used in the scriptures. The Bible is not used. That word is not there. The Bible is books. What is used and what is identified is scriptures. These are the scriptures of the prophets and of the Old Testament. And Jesus was verifying that. Now, as they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going to go on further. But they urged him strongly, said, stay with us for it’s nearly evening and the day is almost over. And so he went to stay with his new friends. And it said, then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. And all of a sudden he disappeared from their sight. They then asked themselves the question, were not our hearts burning within us when he talked with us on the road and opened up the scriptures to us? The scriptures opened up to us. Guys, when you’re talking about thanksgiving, I was thinking through this and pondering through some of these things in preparation for today, and I thought, what do I have to be thankful for? And you can come up with a lot of things. I’m thankful for my family, for my children, grandchildren. Thankful for each and every one of you. But deep down in my heart, I have to say, why am I able to be thankful? Because I could have been thankful for that without knowing Jesus. But as a person who knows Jesus, what is the one thing that I’m more thankful for than anything in the world? And I want to tell you what it is. I’m thankful for the Word of God. I am thankful that I’ve got a place to go to that doesn’t charge me a hundred bucks an hour, that is not leaning on its own understanding, That has not gotten its wisdom out of a psychology book. But has gotten its wisdom direct from God. And I’ve got a book that I can go to to find out what God says about me. And that I’ve got a book that I can go to when I’m in trouble. Where do you go when you’re in trouble? Where do you go? When your husband or wife dies or a child dies or you’re broke or whatever it is, where do you go? Go into despondency as we talked about? You go into denial? Or do you go in here and find truth, guys? There are people sitting in this room, I’ll guarantee you, who take this book for granted. Read it maybe when you need help. And then you see the person that says, I need help, Jesus. Where do I go? Oh, there it is. That’s nonsense. This is a book. It isn’t a fairy game. It isn’t something you stick your finger in and say, oh, there’s God’s message for me today. He’s got a message about himself. This is a book talking about his faithfulness. This is a book talking about His mercy. This is a book where you can go and get your mind and your attitude totally renewed on truth. Am I right or wrong, guys? You got a bad attitude? Then get it corrected with a good attitude. How do you get a good attitude? By going to what’s good. And that’s this book. This is where you will learn wisdom from God. that will carry you through every problem and trial and tribulation that you will ever encounter in this life. I don’t care whether you’re a child or whether you’re a newlywed or a nearly dead. This is what’s going to carry you through in life. Now, after Jesus had appeared to these men, And he had taught them the truth. And what does truth do to us, guys? I mean, is that just words or is that true? I mean, is it really, in your own experience, is that true or are these just words? Is it true that truth sets you free? Isn’t it wonderful to be set free from error? Because Do we get some air in the world? Did anyone ever listen? That’s all we get. And you and I can be set free from that. I think of the scriptures where it talks about Jesus. It says, if someone comes and says Jesus is over there or he’s out in the field someplace or he’s a vision on the wall, don’t go there. He isn’t there. Now, what does that set you free from? Racing out to see Jesus. He isn’t there. He says when Jesus comes back, the whole world will see him at once. And so he isn’t coming back in secret. Now isn’t it good to know that so that you can’t be conned? Because guys in this world, there’s a lot of con artists. And there’s a lot of people who want to con you in order to take advantage of you. And so what he’s saying, if you want to be free from that kind of error, there’s only one place to go to get to know what truth is so that you won’t be conned by error. Now they got up and they returned at once to Jerusalem and they found the eleven with them and those with them assembled together and they said, what did they say? What did they say to the guys? What did they say, guys? Can you all read? It’s what? It is what? True. It’s true. The Lord has risen. You see, they were sad because they believed He died… but they didn’t believe that he was raised from the dead. They said some women went back and said the grave was empty, didn’t they? So they agreed the grave was empty, but I want to guarantee you they were not into the fact that he was raised from the dead. They were concerned as who took the body? Where’d the body go? Now, after meeting with Jesus and getting confronted with truth, and they said, it’s true, he’s raised. He has risen and he has appeared to Simon. Then the two told what happened on the way to Emmaus and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. He has risen and he has appeared to Simon. Then the two told what happened on the way to Emmaus and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. They broke the bread. What do you suppose they saw when he broke the bread? the holes in his hands. And they recognized who this man was. While they were still talking about this, here he was going back into this room with the apostles and all of those assembled with him, saying to them, guys, it’s true. This Jesus is raised from the dead. And all of a sudden, Jesus appears to them. It doesn’t say he knocked on a door or or that he turned the knob to get in. He just showed up. And then, as always, says what I think is a riot, Peace be with you. Now, you’ve probably just seen someone walk through a wall and then say, Peace be with you. Peace be with you. Peace. Shalom. They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. Now, guys, when you have seen someone, or if you would ever have the opportunity been there to have seen this, a man hanging on a cross, beaten beyond measure before he ever got there, hanging on a cross, blood all over him, naked on a cross, beaten, plucked out a beard, plucked out his beard, crown of thorns on his head, blood all over him. And you’ve seen a man like this and then put in a grave and And you know full well this man is dead. And then all of a sudden you see him alive in his glorified body. What do you suppose you would think? I think I’m seeing a ghost. This is not what you see. When you see a man who’s dead, you see him dead. You don’t see him alive again. So they thought they saw a ghost. And what did Jesus say? Why are you troubled? And why do doubts rise in your minds? Again, what was he referring to? The Scriptures. Don’t you remember what was written in the Scriptures? That’s what you’re doubting. What was written. Jesus was always taking us back to these scriptures have told you what was going to happen. It has now happened. Why are you not believing the scriptures? Touch me, he said. Look at my hands and my feet. It’s myself. Touch me and see. A ghost doesn’t have flesh and bones as you see I have. When he had said that, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still didn’t believe it, they still couldn’t believe it. And guys, I don’t have any problem with that. Do you? You see something like that, you say, I see it, but I can’t see it. I can’t internalize it. It’s too much for me. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, He asked them, do you have anything to eat? Isn’t that amazing? You would think, hey guys, let’s have a party. Hey, do you have anything to eat? So they took him and gave him a piece of broiled fish. And he took it and ate it in their presence. And then he said to them, this is what I told you while I was still with you.

SPEAKER 02 :
Now guys, what Jesus told them while he was still with them is contained in these books. We call them the scriptures. So when we open up the word of God to read it, it’s like God speaking to you. Everything he said must be fulfilled that is written about me in the law of Moses. In other words, the first five books of the books of Moses. And in the prophets and in the Psalms. In other words, in the totality of the Bible, everything written back then must be fulfilled. So when something is written about something that is going to be fulfilled, once it’s fulfilled, what do you do with what’s written about it? You can use it as a reference, but it’s been fulfilled. And you didn’t fulfill it. He said, I did. So all that was written back then was written concerning me. Me. And I’m here. So where does your focus now go? On the book that was talking about me or on me? On me. The old was telling about me. But me has come. Then he opened their minds. And guys, how we need this. Our minds to be open so that we can understand what? Scriptures. Now guys, I’m not worshiping at the foot of scriptures. I’m just saying scriptures are what point us to the one that we do worship. And if we don’t have the scriptures, we don’t know who to worship. You’re not going to go with verbal tradition. Because you don’t know who’s told you verbal tradition. I know who told me this. I know who told me this. I know who wrote this. It’s a verbal tradition. I don’t have a clue who started that. And so Jesus did not open their minds so that they could understand tradition. As a matter of fact, Jesus said, that’s your problem. You’re worshiping at your traditions instead of the Word of God. The Word of God is called Scriptures. And he opened their minds so that they could understand the meaning of what? Scriptures. The books that we hold in our hands today. He told them this was what was what? Written. He didn’t say this was what was verbalized. What was verbalized was written. Why? Guys, it’s down black and white. Do you know that whatever you say just goes into the wind? As a matter of fact, wife, ask your husband, what did I say five minutes ago? And you will see it went into the wind most of the time. And probably vice versa. But if what I said or what she said to me was written down and showed to me, that’s inconcreted. Now if I don’t know what she said, it’s because I’m not reading. So God took his spoken word and secured it in what we call scriptures. And that’s why he has to open up your mind so that I can understand what? The meaning of what? Scriptures. Your eye has not seened. Your ear has not heard and your mind has not conceived of those things that God has prepared for those who love them, but it must be revealed by who? The Spirit. In order for you and me today to understand what he’s talking about here, understand the meaning of scriptures, the Holy Spirit of God who lives in you, must be there revealing it to you. That means I must learn to rely upon Him, the Holy Spirit, instead of you and me, a person who has also hopefully received inspiration from the Holy Spirit. Now, why did He give us teachers? Why did He give us prophets and evangelists? To proclaim the message. If a person has learned, and there’s two ways you can learn. You can learn from the Holy Spirit of God teaching you. Or you can learn from man teaching you. Guys, we go to seminary. And a person say, have you been to seminary? I feel like saying to some time, yes, I did. I attended the Mormon seminary. Or Jehovah’s Witness seminary. You go to seminary, it has no meaning to it at all. Which one are you talking about? If you went to a Baptist seminary, what are you going to learn? Baptist theology. If you go to a Catholic, where are you going to learn? Catholic theology. You go to a Methodist, what are you going to learn? Not a lot. A lot more counseling courses than biblical courses. You go to a Presbyterian seminary, what are you going to learn? Presbyterian theology. So it depends on where you go. Now, is that what God wants us is to get out of cemetery and preach what the Baptist teaches or what the Presbyterian teaches? Or should the seminaries be teaching people that you’re not going to learn the meaning of the Word of God from us unless the Spirit reveals it to you? Should pastors be teaching people, don’t listen to me, I could be lying to you? They should be. I want you to learn the meaning of the word of God from the revelation of the Holy Spirit of God living in you. I can either lean on my own understanding in regard to the interpretation of the word of God, or I can lean on the Holy Spirit of God. That’s my option. That’s my option. And guys, that is your option. You got two people to lean on. People or the Holy Spirit. And so Jesus will open your and my minds. So that you can understand scriptures. He doesn’t want us just to know scriptures. A monkey can repeat scriptures probably if he learned to talk. A parrot can repeat some things. An actor can learn lines and speak them as if they’re Moses. A lot of people thought Charlton Heston was Moses. Can’t you? But not have a clue what they mean. You’ve just learned some lines. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Okay, amen. What did that mean? I don’t know. Don’t care. Repeated it. Did what they told me to do. Now he told them, this is what was written. Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. This was what was written down, guys. This is why I’m saying you’re foolish because you’re not believing what was written down. The reason you’re not believing when you see it is you didn’t believe it when it was written down. If you believed that and then saw me raised from the dead, you’d believe it immediately. You’d say, oh, that’s what was written. So your problem isn’t in denying me. Your problem is you didn’t understand scripture. So this is going to help you do that. So this was what was written. Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. I’m going to send you what my father has promised. But I want you to stay in this city until you’ve been clothed with power on high. I’m going to send you what my Father has promised. But I want you to stay in this city until you’ve been clothed with power on high. Now, what was he talking about there? Stay in the city until you’ve been clothed with power on high. He was talking about the day of Pentecost, wasn’t he? The day of Pentecost. A day that… We literally in Christianity, except in Europe, kind of ignore. I mean, any of you celebrate the day of Pentecost? I mean, do we have a day of Pentecost celebration? Do you realize that’s the most important holiday? That’s the most important event as far as I’m concerned as a Christian in all of Christianity is the day when the Holy Spirit of God was given to indwell you permanently for the rest of your life. The day when the Holy Spirit of God, instead of coming on men and women for divine service, as it was in the Old Testament, came to indwell permanently people on the day of Pentecost. And so he said, stay there until this event takes place, because on that day, you’re going to be indwelt by God. Isn’t it amazing, guys? that prior to the day of Pentecost, Peter and the rest of the people were hiding in a room, fearful of their death, fearful of the people who had crucified Jesus and were after them, fearful of them. And after the Holy Spirit of God came to live in them, they were up boldly proclaiming that you who crucified Jesus has been raised from the dead. What was the difference in the two? Indwelt by the Spirit. Indwelt by the Spirit of God. Now, when he had led them out of the vicinity to Bethany, he lifted up his hands and he blessed them. And while he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. And then they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually where? At the temple. Doing what? Praising God. Praising God. Now, guys… When we’re looking at this book, we’re looking at the scriptures that God has given us. And I pick up this Bible to read the scriptures. It’s like picking up, it’s like sitting down and saying, Jesus, talk to me. And he starts talking to him. He starts revealing truth to me. Guys, I never prepare a message for you. Not one time have I ever prepared a message for you. I prepare a message for me. And then I teach it to you. If I’m there preparing a message for you, it’s because you need it, but I don’t. And nothing could be further from the truth. This Bible has to speak to me before I can speak it effectively to you. Believe me, guys. If it’s not real in my life, it ain’t going to be real in yours. When I read these things, it’s ministering to me. It’s reaffirming the fact that Jesus is my teacher. I mean, that’s phenomenal. I mean, we take great pride in saying, oh, my professor in seminary was so-and-so. Well… got big news for you our professor is jesus if we had only just grasped it and to realize the importance of the significance of this marvelous book that we hold in our hands today i don’t mean to worship at the book you worship at who the book tells you about but how would you know about him if it wasn’t for the book would you any way to know about him
