EDDIE DEEZEN :
Thank you. Thank you, doctor, very much.
CHRYSANDRA :
Oh, we are so honored. And Eddie, everyone, you know, there’s so many people in this world that have heard your name in so many different sectors. But we want to share with our listeners where they may have heard you from and why it is such an honor to have you on today.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Well, I’m an actor. I do movies. I was in Greece. I was in the original Greece. I was in Greece, too. I was in the Polar Express. Hope you saw it over Christmas. Yes. I was in Nog. Yeah, I was in War Games with Matthew Broderick. I was in Stupid Spielberg’s 1941. I was in I Want to Hold Your Hand, Bob Zemeckis’ first film. And Critters, I’ve done a couple of the Critters movies. And I was Man Dark in Dexter’s Laboratory. I’ve done several cartoon shows. I was Poppin’ Race Crispies. I’ve done lots of voiceovers.
CHRYSANDRA :
Eddie, we were just so honored just for your leadership and how you’ve been able to say yes to the dreams inside of your heart, living fearlessly. Can you just take us back when you were a little boy and what that was like to now be doing what you are to do today as a world renowned actor and voiceover and just a leader in the world?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Well, I got a lucky break, doctor. I was very lucky. When you’re outside showbiz, you don’t know when you’re not within it, when you’re not being an professional actor. You don’t realize how hard the odds are, how tough the odds are. It’s not usually that good. Most people will try and fail just because of the sheer numbers. It’s like trying to be a major league baseball player. You can be a great player, and there’s only a finite number that will be needed. There’s needed for this movie and this movie and this or this TV show or this commercial. And that’s it. And there are literally millions of people trying out for that. So there’s a lot of competition. So I lucked out. Before I came to Hollywood, there was a rule. It sounds insane, but the rule was you can’t work unless you’re in the union. You can’t be in the union unless you work. It was a horrible catch-22. Now, I think it’s been changed. I think you can go and join SAG now. The Screen Actors Guild SAG merged with AFCA, the television union, and they merged. I think you can pay them a flat rate now and at least be in the union. So at least you’re alive. But it used to be, you’d come out, and if you were in a movie, what am I supposed to do? But luckily, I auditioned for Grease, and I got Grease, and it got me my union card, and that started me rolling. So it was just lucky. It was a very religious story how I got Grease, if you believe in our religion. Yes, we do.
CHRYSANDRA :
Tell us, Eddie.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Sure. I went into Grease. This was one of my earliest auditions. I had an agent named Regina Penner. I don’t know if she’s even still alive. Hopefully she is. I’ll say hi to her if she’s there, if she happens to hear this. But I went in and auditioned for Grease. There was three people in the room with me. Alan Carr, the Grease producer, the Grease casting director, Joel Thurm, and our director, Randall Kleiser. So they were there. And Eugene is a rather small role. You know, I had like four lines. Hi, I’m Eugene. Oh, thank you. Thank you. I did my little lines. You know, I came in dressed as a Pee Wee Herman suit, you know, literally as Pee Wee Herman. And he later became my friend. And I think he got the suit I did for me because look at my suit in Greece. It’s exactly like Pee Wee’s suit. And I did his first movie. He did a movie called Midnight Madness. And that’s where I met Pee Wee. This was before he was even Pee Wee. He was Paul Reuben. But anyway, back to the Greece audition. I auditioned and I noticed the guys were nudging each other. They were like looking in the room nudging. So I thought that was a good sign. I sent my lines, you know, hi, I’m Eugene. Oh, thank you. You know, you’re a great picture. I go, hey, what are you doing? They messed up my hair and, you know, like that. So anyway, I thought they would nudge each other. I thought it was a good sign. You know, when guys check out a cute girl, they’ll nudge each other. or this hot guy, you know, hey, get a look at that guy, you know, that hunk, you know. So they met each other. A couple of days later, doctor, they greased the people, called my agent and said, we want Eddie in the movie. So I was ecstatic. I was through the roof. You know, I called all my friends. I called my family. I’m going to get this movie with John Travolta. It’s called Grease. You know, a major film movie. So a couple of days later, Paramount called my agent. They said, Eugene is a very small role. We’re not going to use Eddie in Grease. We’re going to cut him out. So, of course, I want to jump off a cliff. Not only did I lose the movie, I got my first movie, I lost it, but I told everybody I’m going to be in it. So I also look like an idiot, you know, like that. So anyway, my agent said, I’m going to come down, we’re going to go to church and pray. Ironically, doctor, my friend and I had a friend, Kelly, Sue Kelly, she was an old lady. She was one of my few friends. I was like 18 or 19. We would go to this church and pray together. We would go routinely and we would just pray. And I would just pray. But this lady took me to the church. It’s still there in Hollywood. It’s called our Mother of Good Counsel Church. It’s on Hollywood and Vermont in Hollywood. If you want to visit it, it’s a very… We went into the church. Doctor, I prayed so fervently. Please, dear God, let something good happen. Please, dear God, please help me. Please help me. A couple days later, a pair of my colleagues, they said, we’re going to put Eddie back in the movie. My secular friends say, you’ve got a lucky break. You just lucked out. My friends who are believers, who are religious believers, they go, it was divine intervention. Yes, right. They had mercy on you in your favor. So take it however you want, but that’s 100% true story. That’s how I got Grease. Eddie, what? Oh, go ahead. It’s rather a small role, you know. I kind of stand out because I look different. All the other guys are like Fonzie, you know, they’re real cool, leather jackets, high heels. I look kind of different. So that’s where I got a break, even though it’s a small role. And people remember me to this day. When Denise and I do signing shows, we always get tons of Greece requests. Greece is still the thing I’m most known for. The guy from Greece, you know, the guy from Greece. Right. I met Sylvester Stallone at a signing show. Uh-huh. And I was there talking to him. And he looks at me and he goes, and I go, I’m the guy from Greece. He goes, that’s it. Right. Mickey Dolenz and the Monkees, this exact same thing. I’m talking to Mickey Dolenz at a signing show, and he looks at me, he’s trying to play, I go, I’m the guy from Grease. He goes, that’s it, the same thing. People know me as the guy from Grease, that song pretty much known.
CHRYSANDRA :
Right, right. Well, and Eddie, so, and that was your very first movie.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
of all time yeah usually people’s movie is turkey you know usually it’s a non-union movie it’s low budget you know everybody does a little bad movie first movie but i looked i was in this classic you know it’s like citizen kane reese’s iconic yeah everybody’s seen grief you know and
CHRYSANDRA :
And Eddie, what was it like? So for this to be your first experience walking in there, what do you remember just feeling and sensing and interacting with all the different actors from John Travolta and Olivia New in John? And I mean, what was that like?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
For you. We all lucked out. I’ll just tell you about Greece per se. Yeah. People always ask me, I get that question all the time. What was it like filming in Greece? And I always go, do you remember the greatest party you’ve ever been to? The best part of your life where you loved everybody? You just didn’t want to leave. It was just like the most joyous thing. And Greece was like that every, day a month and a half a great party that John Travolta was a prince he was just the nicest sweetest guy he always called me buddy never called me Eddie how are you buddy my first scene in Greece you see the very first thing I walked down the stairs and the T-Birds messed with me you know they messed up my hair you know After every take, John would go. He goes, are you all right, buddy? Are you okay, buddy? And they’d go, cut, take two. I walked down T-Bird’s mess when we cut. John, you okay, buddy? Do you need anything, buddy? He would always say, are you all right, buddy? He was the nicest guy ever. And just a very sweet guy. Olivia was so sweet. Olivia, I only met one time. We were on the set. I was with Olivia and two other guys. And we were on the Paramount lot. And we hijacked the car. It was just a crazy goof. I was in the front seat, the passenger seat. Olivia was in the back seat, passenger seat. And there was a guy driving and a guy. And we just took this loose car, and we drove around the lot. We joy-rode and rode around. Anyway, I thought we hijacked this car. And then about 40 years later, doctor, somebody said to me, what color was that car? I said, I think it was red. They go, don’t you remember, stupid? That was grease lightning. You guys were riding around. You didn’t hijack a car. The guy had the key, and you took a ride in grease lightning. I said, oh, yeah, that was grease lightning. But anyway, I was with Olivia in the car, and I turned around to her. And she said, you’re funny. And I said, thank you. That was one time I talked to Olivia. Anyway, cut to 2017. My mom and I went to Las Vegas. We saw Olivia’s concert. Olivia was performing there. We saw her. In the middle of Olivia’s concert, she stops the concert. She goes, I want to call an old friend up on stage. She calls me up. We got a standing ovation. It was the only standing ovation I ever got. It was like two or three ovation. We were hundreds and hundreds of people. It was just a huge ballroom. They gave me a standing ovation. Olivia took me aside. She goes, come up to my room after the show. Bring your mom up with me. She knew mom was there with me. I guess somebody told her. But mom and I went up to her. We talked to her for like a half hour. And my mom was the most wonderful lady in the world. And Olivia was the nicest lady. So mom and Olivia got people. I got to do that for my mom. And I miss Olivia. You know, we all love Olivia. We all miss her to this day. God bless her. I hope wherever she is now, she’s doing well. But she was an angel.
CHRYSANDRA :
those are just priceless, just moments. And we, that is so special. I think Eddie, that people, you know, I think they just think that, um, they don’t know how a career gets started, but for you to be able to share that it really was God’s grace to be in favor, to be able to get you on there. Uh, we, we can’t wait to hear, um, What happened after that? What was that transition after that movie? Was it phone calls and bookings right after? Or was there a little bit of a pause?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
I did do two movies later that year. I got into Grease and then I did a low budget one called Laser Blast. Laser Blast is a low budget science fiction film. They did a satire about Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is much funnier than the movie. It’s hilarious, but It’s kind of a cult science fiction movie, you know. I worked on it three days. And the lead guy was named Kim Milford. He passed away of AIDS, unfortunately. And I had a crush on her. I remember my hairdresser, Betty Goldberg, to this day. I don’t know if she’s still around. But hi, Betty, if you hear this. But I had a crush on her when we filmed it. And then I did a movie called I Want to Hold Your Hand. Now, that was significant because it was the first film of Robert Zemeckis, who later wrote me into the play. He did the Polar Express. He remembered me, and I’m not in the Polar Express. My character, Know-It-All, is not in the book, the Polar Express. Chris Van Allsburg wrote the book, and I’m not in it, but he made up my character, Know-It-All, and wrote it for me, so I got in because of him.
CHRYSANDRA :
That is spectacular. Eddie, on this journey of going after your dreams and calling, we just know that there are so many different giants that try to come up and stop us and prevent us from moving forward. How have you continued to move forward step by step to be able to pursue what you have known in your heart to be your true God-given dream?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Well, what you say is true, doctor. You’re 100% true. And you have to recognize that. Unfortunately, we’re living on a planet with 7 billion people. And a certain percentage are not nice people. They’re not good people. You’re obviously one of the good people. A vast majority of the planet is good people. Those people you run into in the street, in restaurants and movies, schools, whatever. They’re good people. They’re just trying to get along and they don’t want to hurt anybody. Unfortunately for us all, there’s a small percentage, maybe like 5%, 10%, whatever. They’re just, you know, I can call them what they are, but let’s just say they’re very mean people or nasty people. Eddie, I’m going to pause you.
CHRYSANDRA :

And we have the world renowned Eddie Deezen on with us. And Eddie, you were just sharing right before break that, you know, that along this way of the Giants coming along, you’ve been able to persevere. And you were just sharing that there are there are good people and bad people.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Yes, absolutely. And like I said, the most important thing to remember is two things. First of all, remembering that they are there. They exist. So don’t live life with rose-colored glasses. Realize, unfortunately, you know, we don’t live in a Leave it to Beaver, Mayberry world. We live in a real world. Right. A last majority. way the people are good but acknowledge that there are bad people there and when they do come into your life recognize them for what they are and steer clear of them because we’ve all every one of us had that experience somebody’s come into our life one of those not nice people and they screwed us around to whatever degree they’ve screwed you around and you’re left kind of spinning you know what happened there you know and you just acknowledge that there and there there’s something inside their head something’s messed up inside their head that guides it i would Most of us are trying to survive. You know, we want to survive. We want other people to survive. And these people, Ayn Rand, the philosopher, she said they have the philosophy of death. They just they’re walking death and they want people to succumb. They don’t want you to survive. And they don’t want to survive themselves.
CHRYSANDRA :
And so, Eddie, how do you avoid them or how do you get out of their way so that you have that discernment?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
It’s very few. I’ve done like 25 movies or whatever. And a few times there have been some on the set in whatever capacity. Oh yeah. Working a job or a movie, you’re stuck, you know, let’s say you’re not even in trouble. You’re at a regular job or, you know, at a car dealership or you’re a secretary and there’s one there and you need the money. You have to stick, be there. So I guess just try to avoid them as much as you can. Don’t get involved and don’t have a relationship with them, you know, and if you can get out of there, let’s say they want to be your boyfriend or your girlfriend or something like that. You get it.
CHRYSANDRA :
That is powerful wisdom. Eddie, so you told us one very special miracle story on your journey. Is there another impossible circumstance that came up that you didn’t know how it was going to work out, but you knew you were supposed to do, you know, take the next step of faith and you saw a miracle?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Well, doctor, my biggest life challenge, the worst by far, the worst part of my life is I was one of the heart murmur. A ventricle is not fully connected to my heart. And most people’s heart go, my heart would go, and I had it when I was a little kid. And my doctor said, it’s not causing a problem, but this may cause you a problem later on in life. Anyway, one day in 2019, I think it was, I was running. I felt something pull in my chest. And then I started feeling woozy. What happened is I pulled the ventricle, came out of my heart, blood was leaking into my head. Yeah, I was given emergency heart surgery January 6, 2020, and then that was okay. I survived that. The bad thing is they put me on all these meds. I’m very anti-drugs myself, but I’m a libertarian. If you want to take meds, it’s your business, but I don’t take them myself. But they put me on all these meds, like 20 a day, and I started acting crazy. I did crazy things. I got into a confrontation with police. I was throwing plates at cops, literally, and they chased me around the room in any way possible. The upshot is I was arrested. I was put into jail for a month. And I was put into this mental hospital for eight months. So that was a very hard challenge. And I remember I was going to jail where my mom visited me in the hospital or something. But I’ll never forget what my mom said. My mom was the nicest lady ever. She was my world. But she said, you’re going to come out of this. You’re going to come out of this better than ever, and things are going to go good. So luckily, I did ultimately come out of it. I came out of it, and my life is good now. But it took a long time. And the sad thing is, doctor, I hurt a lot of people, but I don’t remember. The sad thing about these drugs is they block out your memory. And my short-term memory is so bad. The last two or three or four years, I will forget all the time, whereas I have great long-term memory. I remember all these incidents when I was a little kid. In school, even when I was a baby, I can remember all these memories. But I don’t remember the last three years. And I met people who were mad at me, and I don’t know why, but I apologized to them. My brother is one of them. Something happened with me and my brother, and he excommunicated me. Luckily, we’re back friends. One of the best things that happened this quick is my brother and I got back in touch. So we’re back as friends. In fact, I just read a letter from him about today. So we’re back in touch. That’s wonderful. Yeah, the people I hurt may have heard this. I apologize to you for whatever I did. It wasn’t really me.
CHRYSANDRA :
Well, Eddie, I think that they they see your heart and I think everyone tuning in does as well. And and this journey of healing. So, Eddie, would you say it’s a miracle that you’re here today that you survived through all of that?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Yeah. Not only could I have passed away, but I wanted to pass away, doctor. I tried not eating in the hospital. I was so unhappy. When you’re in a hospital like that, it’s like every day lasts a week. It’s what it’s like for eight months. I don’t know how I got through it, but I tried not eating and that didn’t do me. Then I had heard, doctor, that if you don’t drink water for three days, if you don’t drink for three days, you’re going to die. So I literally didn’t drink anything for three days. I was still alive. You know, my body just kept going. Luckily, I had a strong body and it kept going. But I wanted to die because in the services like that, death is always preferable. But I guess the message is always keep going because you never know what’s going to happen. Life takes so many weird twists and turns for all of us, you know. Right. And you never know how it’s going to work out. Right. To anybody who’s listening to your show now who might be going through a bad time, a terrible time. I’m sure there are. Just realize there is tomorrow. There’s next week. And things can get better. You can meet that. We talk about meeting those bad people. The other side is you meet somebody very good and very special who will change your life for the good. So that can happen, too. Or you might just get a lucky break.
CHRYSANDRA :
Eddie, so how did you move forward from just being in such a valley season? What kept you moving forward?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
I don’t know. I just, I just had a strong body. My body’s just very strong. I’m not physically strong, like a, like a strong guy, but I, I guess I have a part in my, my body’s pretty, it kept going, you know? Yeah.
CHRYSANDRA :
Yes.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Well, my girlfriend at the time, she said I was in a bad time. And my girlfriend, I remember she said, she said, maybe you’re being tested. And I never forgot that. Maybe you’re being tested. Who knows? Who knows the forces out there? You know, maybe you are being tested by some force. And she said, maybe, maybe I was being tested. I have a friend that was in very difficult circumstances now, kind of like I was in. I won’t elaborate, but he’s going through some very tough time, and he’s got to be strong now. Maybe he’s being tested. I try to communicate. Maybe he’s being tested by some force. Who knows?
CHRYSANDRA :
Eddie, we’re coming up towards the end of our show. We don’t know where time goes. But we do have a couple questions before we go. We know that, you know, people are tuning in and they’re listening and they’re hearing about going after your dreams and calling in life. You’re, you know, some people would say your God given dreams. What would you say would be your wisdom on someone who thinks that they’re stuck and there’s just no way for them to pursue that unique calling on their life? What’s a favorite quote or scenario that you could share with them?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
I would say just hold on to your dream as much as you can. It’s very precious, and only you know it. You know in your heart what it is. And this is another thing to say. If it’s really, really that important, hold on to it. When I say to actors, I get all the time, you know, what advice do you have to get into the business? So many people want to be actors and do voiceovers. And I always say, Doctor, I go, give it the five-year rule. I go, this is a five-year rule. Give it five years. I go, if you get into it and you try it and, you know, get pictures, get an agent, go to auditions, do the best you can. If you haven’t done anything in five years, it’s probably not meant to be. And five years within a lifetime is not really that big of a chunk. You’ve used five years, okay, but you can get some wisdom from that and move on to something else. Life has all kinds of doors. It’s like, here’s another thing I learned, like the person, you know, a relationship. This has happened to us all too, Dr. Nothing. You lose somebody, you lose a boyfriend or a husband or a girlfriend or a wife, and you go, oh my God, my life is ruined. I don’t believe that. There’s 7 billion people out there. And then this person, you acknowledge they were very special, but there’s somebody else out there. I don’t believe that there’s only one. John and Yoko, she’s the only one for me. No, I don’t believe that. I believe there’s a lot of people out there. And if this one isn’t the right one, go to somebody else. They’ll offer you something maybe this person didn’t offer you. But I don’t believe that there’s only one person. And I kind of believe that about your dream to hold on to your dream and all. But you can sublimate it. You know, maybe it’s not that exact. Maybe you can work in local theater, you know, or maybe you can go to direct or maybe you can become an acting coach. You know, right. Sublimated little kind of thing. Maybe just tweak it and push your dream a little and you’re still there. You know, you can make yourself a happy life. You know, you can do it. Yeah. Stay ethical, honorable, stay honest. And I think you can lead in a happy light. Yeah. And stay around the right people. Keep the right people around you. Because they can bring you down through worse than yourself.
CHRYSANDRA :
Eddie, what would be your favorite, you know, from all the movies you’ve been in? Is there a quote that you have cited that sticks in your heart that helps you steer through these different decisions in life?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Oh, boy, what a great one. I want to give you an honest answer. I don’t know necessarily that there isn’t a movie. I’m trying to think. I wouldn’t say that. Or just in general.
CHRYSANDRA :
Yep.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Just, you know, be true to yourself. I’m stealing from Socrates. Be true to yourself. Be true to your goals. uh be honest be honorable be ethical this is very very important i know in the day and age we live in such a nihilistic age of dog eat dog you know politics people hate each other’s guts and all but realize that’s not only you right you’re really a good spirit we’re all good even the worst of us is good and we talked about those bad people earlier in the show yeah even below scratch all the garbage off them all the crap you know in the garbage they’re within me too that’s why they’re so miserable that’s why you can’t be bad and be happy because they’re really contrary to their nature So just try to be as good as you can. And try to help each other, you know. Try to live a life of help. That brings tremendous joy. If you can’t achieve something, go out and try to help somebody else. Or maybe look at somebody else that’s in a worse situation. Look at some homeless guy in the streets, maybe not eating that night, you know. And maybe give him $5 or maybe take him out to McDonald’s and buy him a hamburger and fries and a milkshake, you know. Do something like that. Maybe that can help you. But there’s a lot of people out there. There’s a lot of adventures. Maybe get involved with other people. Get involved with your church, you know, or some organization that helps. I’m on Facebook. You know, that’s my saving. Denise has her interest. You know, Denise is a wonderful man, but find some outside interest. It’s not just a job to find other things that interest you and their joy. Everybody should have their own joy and passion. That’s what you do with your life.
CHRYSANDRA :
We love. Well, I think that’s a mic drop, Eddie. And everything you’ve said has just been just life changing. We appreciate you so much. What’s coming up next, Eddie, for you? And how can people get in touch with you to be able to be part of this movement and to see all the upcoming films and events that you will be attending at?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Well, thank you. I do now a thing called signing shows. I do signings and signing shows. And it’s funny you should ask because I will be at the Culture Collision for three days on January 23rd, 24th, and 25th. This is at the Atlanta Convention Center in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s, let’s see, old trail ground crew wrestlers. Batgirl will be there. Star Wars actors will be there. But I will be there signing there at the Atlanta Convention Center in Atlanta, Georgia, January 23rd, 24th, 25th. That’s Saturday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Not this weekend, but the next weekend. And this is Culture Collision. Culture Collision. So I’d love to see you there. Please come and meet me. I’d love to see you there. This will be the manager, and we’d love to say hi to you and talk to you. I’d like to shake your hand.
CHRYSANDRA :
Oh, my goodness. Yeah. Wherever anyone is tuning in and around the world, this is an event you want to be at is going to be epic. I have heard all about it from various friends around the country and even the world. And it would be. It’s such an honor. You guys want to meet Eddie and his amazing team and to be part of this. So thank you so much for that. And Eddie, thank you so much also for signing a couple DVDs that listeners will be able to win. And you’ll be able to do that by following Eddie as well as being able to get entered in to see him at this upcoming event. So awesome.
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Yes, ma’am. I’m on Facebook every day. Go to my Facebook page. I write my jokes, my posts every day. That’s my joy. So please come here and be a follower of mine on Facebook or be a friend of mine.
CHRYSANDRA :
Eddie, can you share that handle with everyone real quick?
EDDIE DEEZEN :
Sure. Well, on Facebook, just E-D-D-I-E. My last name is spelled D-E-E-Z-E-N. You’ll see my picture. There’s a couple of fake pages, but you’ll see on my page, it’s me and my mom. Perfect. And that’s my page. So I hope you enjoy that. I hope you’re going to get some laughs. I hope you learn some trivia from my page. Yeah.
CHRYSANDRA :
Well, and it’s one of my favorite things to look at, Eddie, on Facebook. And you guys, if you’re driving right now or you’re in your office, go follow Eddie right now. And you are in for such a treat. Eddie, we thank you so much for your legacy. And we would love to have you back sooner than later for upcoming events. But we thank you so much. And challenge everyone, what would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? That answer to that question has been placed on your heart for such a time as this. God has put that in you. Till next time, dreamer. Keep dreaming big.
