So great a salvation! Oh, what an awesome text from the book of Hebrews and a study deserving of our time today from the International Gospel Hour that’s coming up.
SPEAKER 02 :
It’s time for our broadcast from the International Gospel Hour. I’m Jay Webb, and welcome to our study today as we embrace God’s Word to help us meet the challenges of today. Let’s open our Bibles and open our heart for this time of Bible study with our speaker, Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour, a broadcast of the Churches of Christ. Here’s Jeff.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, thank you to our Jay Webb, and greetings and hello, everyone. How thankful we are to take the word of God that according to Psalm 119, 105 is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths. So let’s pursue the word of God today. Turn to the word of God and the scriptures we will search today begins with Hebrews 2 verses 1 through 4. Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him? God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will. So great a salvation. Hebrews 2, verse 3. You know, friends, salvation is great. And today we’re going to inquire why salvation is great. And we’ll pick up with our study in about 30 seconds.

SPEAKER 01 :
Why salvation is great? It was thought of God. From Ephesians 3, verses 9 through 11, And to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ, to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. You see, salvation is great because it was thought of God. Oh, to read the beginning of the ages was hidden in God, and according to His eternal purpose, before time began, God knew of the salvation that would be accomplished in Jesus Christ. Second salvation, or why salvation is great, it was bought by Christ. to see the price that Jesus paid as Isaiah the prophet depicted the suffering Savior in Isaiah 53, and how He purchased with His own blood redemption, 1 Peter 1 and verse 19. In Matthew 26 and verse 28, there at the Last Supper when he took the cup and said, For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. And in Acts 20 and verse 28, speaking to those elders, those overseers of the church there in Ephesus. to take heed unto yourselves and unto all the flock, over the which the Holy Spirit hath made you overseers, that you may feed the church of God which he purchased with his own blood. It was thought of God. It was bought by Christ. That’s why salvation is great. But let’s keep on. Why salvation is great? It was brought through the Holy Spirit. Remember before Jesus ascended to heaven, he told his apostles in John 14, 26, John 15, 26, and John 16, 13, how the Comforter or the Helper, the Holy Spirit would come and would guide them into all truth. That whatever they would speak or he would speak, they would speak. Did that not happen in Acts chapter 2 when the Spirit came upon the apostles and they began to preach the gospel? And when people were questioning what was going on, Peter simply went back to the prophet Joel in Joel 2 where those Jews on Pentecost would fully understand and see the affirmation. from God who thought of salvation, the Christ who bought the salvation, and now the Spirit had brought salvation through the apostles as they preached and proclaimed the gospel of Christ. And on that day of Pentecost, oh, how they were commanded to repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Verse 41 says, They that gladly received His word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Those that were added were saved, as we note in Acts 2.47. Saved and added to the church. How beautiful. I’ll give you a fourth one why salvation is great. Because it was fought for when Satan appeared. Think about it. When Adam and Eve sinned, in Genesis 3 and verse 15, God looked upon that serpent and said, I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and her seed. It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. He told Satan, you’re going to be crushed. That coming down upon your head, that you will bruise him, yes, through death. But in so doing, when he overcomes death, he will crush you, Satan, and you have no power. This was not an uh-oh when Adam and Eve sinned. But remember, going back to when time began. How salvation, thought of God in his mind, in his eternal purpose through Jesus. And in Genesis 3, verse 15, what you have is the stated prophecy that the seed of woman would survive. And that seed, of course, is Christ, according to Galatians 3, verse 16. Through that seed promised through Abraham. But you see, when Satan appeared, the battle began. The battle was there. What about the wonderful lessons from the book of Job? How Job, who was very faithful unto God, who served God, and how Satan would speak with God and afflict Job, but Job’s faith stood firm. While he questioned things, he never questioned God. He began to question out loud, and when God appeared to him, or rather when God spoke to Job to correct, to strengthen him, Job acknowledged how unworthy he was. But you see, Satan gave all that he could, but Job never turned from God. Salvation is great. It was fought for when Satan appeared. When Satan tried to win Jesus over, when he tempted Jesus in Matthew 4, Jesus continued to reply, for it is written. And Satan fought, but he lost. And he still loses today. Another reason why salvation is great, it is taught by the gospel. We’re able to let people know the salvation of Christ through the gospel message. For after all, it was said in Mark 16 and verse 15, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, and he that believes and is baptized shall be saved. He that believes not will be condemned. In Matthew 28, 18 through 20, that they would go into all the world, they would go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. How the gospel, that good news that Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15, beginning with verse 1, it was preached unto those at Corinth who had received it. Not only had they received it, but they stood in it, they were saved by it, if they were to continue in what was preached. How beautiful to think of these things, friends. And a great salvation taught by the gospel message. You see, friends, let’s think about why salvation is great. It was thought of God, bought by Christ, brought through the Holy Spirit, fought for when Satan appeared, and taught this day by the gospel. It’s a great salvation that many seek after. It’s a great salvation, friends, that you very well may need today. I want to pause here and defer to our J-Web for just a bit. This is one of our lengthier offers, if you will, as far as time goes, because we take a little extra time to explain it, because you may go online to look at it, or you may simply just request the material and we can send it to you.
