The Colorado March for Life is back on Friday, April 17, as thousands are expected to gather at the State Capitol in Denver for a public witness on behalf of life. In this interview, Julie Bailey of the Respect Life Apostolate explains why the march still matters in a state where life issues, parental rights, free speech, and religious freedom remain under pressure. She shares how churches, students, ministries, and pro-life groups from across Colorado are coming together to stand visibly and peacefully for the unborn, support families, and remind the culture that every human life is made in
00:00:00 Speaker 1
It’s Mike Triem. I’m here with Julie Bailey. Julie’s the director of Respect Life Apostolate. And Julie, we’re talking about the Colorado March for Life. Thank you for taking the time with us.
00:00:11 Speaker 2
Thank you, Mike. I appreciate the opportunity.
00:00:14 Speaker 1
We want to support Colorado March for Life. We do every year. We also want our partners, our partner ministries to be involved. Tell us what Colorado March for Life is doing this year and then who’s involved, please.
00:00:30 Speaker 2
I shall. So Colorado March for Life, this is our third year partnering with the national March for Life organization. So they’re helping us get it all put together, and they’ve been enormously helpful. But our main organizer for the Colorado March for Life locally is the Pro-Life Colorado Coalition, which represents over 50 pro-life organizations across the state.
00:00:54 Speaker 2
all different denominations, some are medically oriented, some are not, even religiously affiliated, nonprofits, individuals who have a heart for spreading the news, the good news, that life is a gift throughout our state. And that’s what the Colorado March for Life is really all about. And we have a concert that starts, kicks things off at 10 a.m. that’s going to be the praise and worship
00:01:22 Speaker 2
group from Colorado Christian University then at 11 that will this is all on April 17th which is a Friday and then all around the Capitol we’re at the Capitol steps in Denver and then we’ll have a rally and we have all kinds of great speakers lined up for the rally including some religious leaders who are gonna pray over the rally we’ve invited student groups and churches and organizations from all over the state
00:01:50 Speaker 2
to bring buses, bring people, and we’re going to march that route kind of just around the Capitol to be a presence that advertises the beauty of life and what a gift it is from God.
00:02:06 Speaker 1
So, Julie, for the person that says, I know this happens every year, but does it still make a difference? Tell us what you see participating.
00:02:16 Speaker 2
What I see participating in the Colorado March for Life is thousands of people, primarily young people, I am one of the older ones that participates, but showing their hope in a state that really has passed law after law after law that does not honor life, and does not honor religious freedom, and does not honor free speech, and does not honor parental rights, we are out there to say,
00:02:44 Speaker 2
We still care about these things. We still care about life. And we’re going to show the people of our state we will not be silenced. It does matter. It matters. Our presence makes a difference. People will see us out there marching with our sign. Our signs are all very winsome and very positive and very affirming. And what we want is people to realize that the real choice, the real gift of life is worth choosing.
00:03:14 Speaker 1
Julie, I remember driving from Wyoming to Colorado, and as we were getting ready to cross the border into Colorado, Wyoming has a billboard. I don’t know if it’s still up, but they used to have a billboard that reminded everyone that we were crossing into a state that does not value life. And that billboard said, Guess what? We value life. We care. It was amazing.
00:03:40 Speaker 2
Yes.
00:03:41 Speaker 2
And by contrast, for a time, Colorado had billboards at all its major entrances into the state that said, welcome to Colorado, where you can get a safe legal abortion.
00:03:52 Speaker 1
Did it really?
00:03:53 Speaker 2
Yes. I still have pictures on my phone. Because that’s what Colorado, at least the legislature and right now, unfortunately, the majority of those who have voted in recent elections
00:04:08 Speaker 2
are saying, they’re saying we want abortion and we don’t only want abortion, we want abortion all the way up until birth.
00:04:14 Speaker 1
Yes. I remember one of the news agencies talking very gleefully and positively, they thought, with a group that raises money so women can come to Colorado to have an abortion. It’s a group up in Boulder, shouldn’t surprise us, I had no idea that that kind of thing existed, you know, naive me thought,
00:04:37 Speaker 1
Well, no, that could never happen. And this is a group that does that and raises, I forget the amount of money they said they had raised. It was a lot. It was hundreds of thousands of dollars.
00:04:48 Speaker 2
Yeah, they raised so much money for that purpose. And Colorado has become an abortion destination. Some people call it abortion tourism, which
00:05:00 Speaker 2
I love that people come to Colorado to hike and to spend time in our mountains, to ski, to snowboard, to do all the beautiful things in this state that God has created. But to make Colorado about killing the unborn, to me, is offensive. And I am a Colorado native. It is offensive to me, but that is what our state is becoming known for.
00:05:23 Speaker 1
We’re talking with Julie Bailey. We’re talking about the Colorado March for Life. It’s Friday, April 17th at the Capitol. 00 a.m. is the concert, and then it just goes right through. Speakers, then the march around the Capitol. So much good that’s happening, as Julie said, thousands and thousands of people. If you haven’t done this, if you have any way to get down there and do this, you must. Julie, tell us, I think our listeners too would like to know a little bit about your position with the Catholic Church, because
00:05:51 Speaker 1
you and the church are standing very directly in preserving life here in our state.
00:05:58 Speaker 2
We do. The Catholic Church has always stood for life and for all life, from natural conception to natural death. We don’t just talk about the abortion issue, but we do focus a lot on abortion because it sets the tone for how we treat vulnerable life. And in Catholic teaching, every single life has value, and it doesn’t matter
00:06:22 Speaker 2
If that life can sustain itself, if that life was conceived in non-positive situations, it doesn’t matter if that life is at its end. It doesn’t matter. Every single life has value because every single life is created in the image and likeness of God.
00:06:41 Speaker 2
The Catholic Church supports us, and I’ve had, I’ve been working now for the church for seven years in this role, and we have ministries in every parish that are called Respect Life Ministries, and they…
00:06:55 Speaker 2
with their small, you know, their parish group will do whatever their pastor wants them to do to help support life, whether that is addressing human trafficking, whether it is addressing suicide awareness, whether it is addressing abortion, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide. All of these issues are connected because they all affect how we treat life and the dignity with which we treat life.
00:07:20 Speaker 1
Well said, and I want our listeners to know why we work so closely with the Catholic Church, churches throughout the, you know, typically the Denver metro area, but also in Colorado Springs, and innovative priests that are involved in this work. Spirit of Christ here in Denver area is one that we have worked with some in the past.
00:07:41 Speaker 1
Those issues, parental right issues, very often on our sister station, 560 KLZ, we will have guests from the Catholic Church that are talking about parental rights because that’s important, that’s critically important to all of us, obviously as Christians, big.
00:07:58 Speaker 2
Well, and what we know is people need
00:08:04 Speaker 2
to people need to be led. They’re going to be led by good or by evil, depending on what they hear the loudest. So we’re trying to be loud. The Catholic Church and those who support pro-life warriors across the state, we, and that’s March, we want to be loud and say life is good.
00:08:21 Speaker 2
Have babies. Babies are good. And if you’re having problems, we will help you. The Catholic Church supports a number of ministries for single moms, for poor families, for those who are having issues in a pregnancy or in a, you know, with their children at young ages.
00:08:41 Speaker 2
We also have a very compassionate ministry for those who did choose abortion and are healing from that or trying to heal from that, because we know that women and men who have chosen abortion often suffer very serious post-traumatic stress due to that choice, and we are trying to help them reunite with God and
00:09:05 Speaker 2
get their life back on track because they’re so wounded from that abortion.
00:09:09 Speaker 1
Yeah. So good to hear that. And we work with some great, great organizations. I was going to say ministries, but not necessarily always like Alternatives Pregnancy Centers and Life Choices up north. And there are people that are sometimes probably working alongside your churches, but other times they’re just, you know, they’re also like-minded working in this as we urge all of the people listen to our stations
00:09:35 Speaker 1
do is to get involved, including the secular station. We talk about life quite often. Tell us, March for Life. So as we start to do the last part of this and close, what are details people would need to know in terms of parking, logistics, that kind of thing, if they want to participate?
00:09:53 Speaker 2
There are a lot of organizations out there that are bringing buses that will have empty seats and there will be special bus parking. That’s probably the easiest way to get into the march. And if you go to the marchforlife.org backslash Colorado website, there is a place where you can sign up to get on a bus.
00:10:12 Speaker 2
there will be detailed information provided to anybody who signs up to participate in the march about how and where to park, because we all know parking in downtown Denver is very challenging. So you can go to this website and it’ll give you the opportunity to register, register with an email, and then the March for Life organization, I will say, is very good about not spamming people. They just send the absolute necessary information. So they’ll send you that information about what the route of the march is,
00:10:42 Speaker 2
where to park, how to get in and out of that part of Denver, what to expect as far as the speakers are concerned. I’m really excited about the speakers this year because I don’t know if you’re aware, we had a wonderful win in the courts with regard to abortion pill reversal. And the nurse practitioner who was involved in that case, Chelsea Minnick, is going to be our main featuring keynote speaker for the march.
00:11:08 Speaker 1
That’ll be powerful. That’ll be really good.
00:11:10 Speaker 1
Yeah, that was a huge win. I don’t know, was ADF involved in that? Yes. Alliance for Defending Freedom. Okay, that’s, I think that’s how it crossed ours because they’re great at getting us press releases. I want to urge our listeners, get involved. The whole issue of life is, as you know from listening to our radio stations, is very critical to us as a company. Don Crawford Sr., our Catholic Church friends and partners, many of the churches across
00:11:39 Speaker 1
non-denominational churches across the metro area. And Julie and her team are on top of this. They’re part of this whole march that makes a difference. We’ve heard from lawmakers that have, you know, they hear about it, they see the news footage, they’re driving in or going to a meeting, and they see the crowd outside. To people that aren’t believers, that aren’t, you know, don’t know Jesus, it still makes a difference to them.
00:12:06 Speaker 2
Absolutely, we have to stand up. We have to not be afraid to make our voices heard, to defend what is really important.
00:12:15 Speaker 1
Yes, the defenseless that can’t defend themselves.
00:12:18 Speaker 2
Yes, they have no voice. We’re their voice.
00:12:20 Speaker 1
So Julie, what’s the website again for people?
00:12:23 Speaker 2
It’s, well, all the https, whatever that backslash, marchforlife allruntogether.org.
00:12:33 Speaker 2
backslash Colorado.
00:12:34 Speaker 1
So marchforlife.org, all one word, essentially, all together, backslash Colorado. And of course- Correct. You can contact us, no problem. Our lead receptionist will be at the march. She’s been doing that now for as many years as the March for Life has been going in Colorado. Her name’s Charlene, so call Charlene if you have any questions. Julie, any final comments for our listeners?
00:13:01 Speaker 2
My only final comments, be bold, be loud, defend life.
00:13:08 Speaker 1
Julie Bailey, thanks for your time with us. We’re so grateful for you, for the work of the Catholic Church in defending life. So thanks again, Julie.
00:13:17 Speaker 2
Thanks for the opportunity, Mike. Appreciate it.
