In this episode of Victorious Faith, Cherry Campbell delves into the qualities that made David a man after God’s own heart. Exploring the critical nature of an obedient, fully committed heart, she highlights the lessons we can learn from King Saul’s disobedience and the value God places on a repentant spirit. Through biblical examples and thoughtful insights, gain a deeper understanding of why God values the heart’s intentions over mere actions.
SPEAKER 01 :
Good morning. Welcome to Victorious Faith. I’m Cherry Campbell. This morning I’m going to begin sharing with you message number three in a series of messages that I preached in our Victorious Faith services called, What Made David a Man After God’s Own Heart? So join me now in our live service for the beginning of message number three in this series, What Made David a Man After God’s Own Heart? We’re going to pick up tonight with part three of this series, What Made David a Man After God’s Own Heart? Really, what this is, is this is a series that is expecting you to search yourself, search your heart, and what you’re doing and how you’re living. Because these are characteristics of a godly person, a spiritually maturing person, a person after God’s own heart. This is the kind of person that we all want to strive to be. And so I’m going to start again with a little bit of a review. Well, first of all, before I do that even, I want us to read our main two text verses. We have two text verses that we will read every time. And so our first text scripture is 1 Samuel 13, 14. And as a reminder… This is when King Saul disobeyed God. Samuel the prophet had gone to Saul and given him instructions from the Lord that when he went into the next battle, he was supposed to kill everybody, destroy everything. And I believe that was because it was supposed to be a total offering to the Lord. Not that God is a murderer, but sometimes the first, well, that’s a first fruit offering, a new channel of income. Sometimes the first one you get, the first income you get, maybe it’s the first time you get a paycheck from a new channel. You might give the whole thing. Because that’s a firstfruits offering. So that’s what I believe this was in the Lord’s eyes. He was requiring Saul to give it all to him. And that’s why kill every man, woman, and child and destroy everything. Another reason is because the people were wicked. They were idolaters and all of that. And nothing was supposed to be spared. Well, King Saul disobeyed. He saved the king’s life and he saved the sheep and the goats and the flocks and herds. And Samuel came up and said, what is this bleeding sound that I hear? You know, it was supposed to be dead silent, literally. But he saved them. And so that’s when Saul said, oh, I thought I’d present it as an offering to the Lord. And, you know, this isn’t in my notes, but I’m telling you the whole story and I’m going to go back to it. First Samuel 15, because this is where it says that God prefers obedience to sacrifice. Saul was trying to disobey God and just give an offering to God to kind of cover up for his disobedience. God doesn’t accept that. So for Samuel 15, starting in verse 17, first Samuel 15, 17, Samuel said, although you were once small in your own eyes, that’s humility. Did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel, and he sent you on a mission saying, go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites. Make war on them until you have wiped them out. Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the Lord? Verse 20, this is Saul’s answer. But I did obey the Lord, Saul said. I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites, but I brought back Agag their king. The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal. So yeah, we disobeyed God, but we did it so we could sacrifice to the Lord. Verse 22. But Samuel replied, does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice. To heed is better than the fat of rams. Verse 23. For rebellion, which is also disobedience, is like the sin of divination, which is also called witchcraft. Rebellion, disobedience is as the sin of witchcraft. And arrogance is like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has rejected you as king. And so that was a passage that I had in mind. And it goes right with what we’re talking about. And I might come back to it again later. But back to our text scripture, because our text scripture is in 1 Samuel 13, 14. And we see this phrase. a man after his own heart. So Samuel again rebuked Saul because Saul had disobeyed another time. But now Samuel said, your kingdom will not endure. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people because you have not kept the Lord’s command. And then our second text scripture is Acts 13.22. After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him, concerning David. I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do. And so two services back, we looked at the key is the heart. The heart is the main issue. God looks at the heart, 1 Samuel 16, 7. And then just in a quick review, we saw that David kept a clean and pure heart before God. You say, but he committed a great sin, more than one. Yeah, he committed actually multiple. He committed murder. which is probably the worst sin you could think of, probably murder. He also committed adultery. He also disobeyed God in other areas, in counting the people and so forth. He messed up more than once. God is not requiring perfection. He’s requiring a fully committed heart. And actually, in both the Old Testament, Old English, the word perfect, you know, being perfect before God, a perfect heart. In the New Testament, when it talks about a perfect man. Again, that’s the old English for perfect. It’s not what we use the word perfect for. It does not mean perfect like no faults. It means literally wholehearted, fully committed, fully devoted. That’s what perfect means. Perfect means wholehearted, fully committed, fully devoted. That’s what the word perfect means in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. When it’s relating to a person. And so a perfect man. No person is without fault. But you can have a heart that is wholly committed and fully committed and fully devoted to the Lord. And so David, he was not faultless. He was not flawless. But he did keep a clean and pure heart before God because he repented regularly. And we gave several psalms for that. He said, create in me a clean heart. And he said, cleanse me and purify my heart. So he repented. Repentance is… is what keeps your heart clean. Repentance is what keeps your heart clean. And I’m going to stop right there a moment, and I’m going to go back to something that I have shared on the radio. I don’t know that I’ve said it in our service before, but there is a false doctrine of demons going around the body of Christ that says Christians, once you’re born again, No longer need to repent. After you’re saved, you’re saved. And no repentance is ever needed again. That is a doctrine of demons. What they base that on is grace. There’s the false interpretation of grace. But that grace covers you after you’re saved. And so if you mess up, you don’t need to repent. There’s no repentance needed after you’re saved. Well, I’ve got multiple scriptures for that. First of all, in the book of Revelation. Is the book of Revelation in the New Testament? Yes. Is it written to churches? Yes. Yes. Thank you for joining us. Because God has directed this is a time of increase. It is the season of increase. And if you are believing God for increase in your life, in any area, financially, or in your work, or in any area of your life, This is good ground for your good seed.
