We are blessed to offer this material to you from International Gospel Hour, courtesy of our friends at ApologeticsPress.org. Today let’s consider Romans chapter 1, verses 16 and 17, when the Apostle Paul said, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ… For it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, The just shall live by faith. The word gospel simply means good news or glad tidings. Think about the good news of Christ and how that is clearly evident in the scriptures that Jesus is good news, glad tidings, the best news. For example, when he was born, the angel of the Lord declared good tidings of great joy, Luke 2, 8-11. As Jesus walked and lived and taught in Luke 8 and verse 1, He went throughout every city and village preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God and the twelve were with Him. What about His death, burial, and resurrection? That is the gospel message, the good news, 1 Corinthians 15, 1-4. And in John 1, verse 12, speaking of the Christ, But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God. Friends, all of that, Jesus Christ, the gospel message, everything therein, that’s good news, glad tidings. And we are in a world that’s in dire need of good news. I mean, always has been, always will be. And friend, let us see the definition of the gospel message, that it is good or glad. And you know, that’s worthy of our consideration this broadcast. We want to see the power of that good news, those glad tidings, the gospel, the most powerful message revealed to man. And friends, it is good. I want to pause here for about 30 seconds. If you’re new to our broadcast or have been a long-time listener, you might be thinking about a program that you have heard before or something of which you are interested in. SPEAKER 01 :
Friends, let us see the convincing power of the gospel. Now, from our lesson text of Romans 1, 16 and 17, please see the grounds of this power. Verse 17 of the gospel, for in it the righteousness of God is revealed. The righteousness of God is revealed through the gospel. Man can know the righteousness of God. It is God’s power to save. The word power in Romans 1.16 is from the original word dunamis in the Greek language where we get the English word dynamite. It’s strong and yet powerful. Here’s the beauty of the power of the gospel. Where dynamite destroys, the gospel will destroy as well as rebuild the life. It will destroy sin and build the servant. It is convincing because it has no power by itself to save the unbeliever. You see, an unbeliever is condemned already according to John 3.18. An individual must believe and obey the gospel message as Jesus said in Mark 16, 15, and 16. Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. He that believes not shall be condemned. And in Acts 2 and verse 41, when they heard the gospel message and were told what to do in Acts 2 and verse 38, there were additional words that we do not know that Peter brought forth in Acts 2 verse 40. But we do know this. They that gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls, Acts 2 verse 41. Isn’t it something that they gladly received his word, gladly received the glad tidings? You see, the gospel has a convincing power. It will change people when people obey, and they were convinced of its power. Now, notice this with me. Secondly, Not only did they see the convincing power, but there was the convicting power of the gospel. Not only does it save one, but it will keep one saved. 1 Corinthians 15, 1 and 2. Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you, unless you have believed in vain. Now according to 1 Corinthians 1 and 2, this was written to the church at Corinth, the saved, going back to Acts 2.47, and they had received what was preached, and they had somewhere to stand, and they were saved. Not only were they convinced, they were convicted. And a Christian must keep his conviction to the gospel. For after all, the Christian will continually learn. After their obedience to the gospel in Matthew 28, 19, Jesus said in verse 20, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. In Philippians 2 and verse 12, Paul said to the church, Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Now consider the very ones to whom Paul is writing here in the book of Romans chapter 1, later in Romans 6 and verse 17. But God be thanked that you were the servants of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. They were holding their conviction. They were convinced. They were convicted. And friends, they could do so because, third, the gospel is a confident power. You see, it convinces, it convicts, and it grows in confidence. It is the power of God unto salvation. When I think about other words that the gospel is referred to and how it is defined, how about the glorious gospel from 2 Corinthians 4 and verse 4 and 1 Timothy 1.11? A peaceful gospel, Ephesians 6.15. A graceful gospel, Acts 20.24. The everlasting gospel, Revelation 14 and verse 6. and a personal gospel to the church at Ephesus, Paul tells them, the gospel of your salvation, Ephesians 1.13. So, beloved friend, as the gospel is convincing and convicting, note the confidence it builds in the redeemed soul of man. Think about it. Friends, will the gospel convince you to obey it? Will you see the convicting power therein when you obey the gospel? And can you be confident in that gospel? Yes, you can. Friends, with that being said, we’d like to share with you our free Bible study course by mail. Maybe you want to study a little bit more about the gospel.
