I love to study with you and hope you find our time together profitable. You know, in my travels with International Gospel Hour, there are times that I speak at Churches of Christ, and it may be during the Bible class only, which means I get to hear their preacher, and I love those occasions. And so, while making notes of the following lesson, it occurred to me, why not add another series of broadcasts and call it A Sermon I Heard and share it with you? I’m indebted to my friend and brother John Deck of the Ware Branch Church of Christ just north of Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the lesson today that’s simply titled, Truth. Let’s talk truth. Number one, truth must be learned. In John 8, 31 and 32, then Jesus said to those Jews who believed him, If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Friends, we must re-look at the basics and continue to mature with understanding of the truth. In Hebrews 5, 12-14, For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. In 1 Timothy 2 and verse 4, the Bible tells us how Jesus desires all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. In Hebrews 11 and verse 6, for without faith it is impossible to please God. For he that comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those that diligently seek him. We know from Romans 10 and verse 17 that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So if we are to have faith in God, we are going to diligently seek after Him, and He provides His word that we may do so. We want to learn truth that we are not conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds that we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect truth. Good and acceptable and perfect will of God, Romans 12 and verse 2. There is no doubt, friends, that the scripture which is truth, truth must be learned. Second, truth must be lived. Not only do we learn it, but we apply it. We noted that from Hebrews 5, 12-14 moments ago. But let’s consider James 1, verses 22-24. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror. For he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. Notice, we are to be doers of the word and not hearers only. Truth must not only be learned, it must be lived. In 1 John 2, verses 4 and 5, he who says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in him. Remember, keep the word. Not only learn it, but live it. Keep it as part of us. In 1 John 3 and verse 7, little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous just as he is righteous. So when we learn truth and we live truth and we are trained within it to distinguish good from evil, again Hebrews 5, 12 and 13, then we will not allow one to deceive us. We will take that teaching. We will take what we hear. We will put it up against the truth to see if it stands. Friends, not everyone that stands behind a pulpit, not everyone that stands in a place that they would even refer to as a church, is not necessarily right if they’re not according to the Scripture. Truth must be learned. Truth must be lived. And friends, finally, truth must be loved. Cherish it over and above all. Proverbs 3, 3 and 4 Let not mercy and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man. Keep that mercy and truth close within us. Psalm 119, verse 165, Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing causes them to stumble. Love the law. Psalm 1, 1 and 2, Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law he meditates day and night. Oh, what about the words of Jeremiah 15 and verse 16? Your words were found and I ate them. And your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. For I am called by your name, O Lord God of hosts. Truth. Bind it. Write it. Love it. Have delight in it. Eat them. And rejoice. And allow the heart to rejoice in that truth. Truth must be learned, must be lived, and must be loved. That, my friends, the truth. You know, I really enjoyed listening to that lesson that day. So I hope to share with you a little bit more in the future a sermon that I heard and to share it with you. I love to study different pieces of material that I come across. And I’m so grateful for so many. who share thoughts and who have written many articles and all the things of which we partake.
