Hi, this is Jay Webb for International Gospel Hour. Welcome to our broadcast today. For over 90 years, Churches of Christ have proclaimed God’s Word through our broadcasts. Just ahead is another Bible-based lesson with Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour. Let’s begin.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, thank you always to our J-Web, and greetings and hello everyone. It’s always good to have you with us for our study today from the International Gospel Hour. We’ve been on the air since 1934, and we are still growing strong, and we’re grateful that we can grow and go and press onward thanks to you, our listeners. Let us begin with our lesson text of James 1, verses 1 through 8. James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greetings. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and will be given him. But let him ask in faith with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord. He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. With the greeting of brethren, we readily note James is writing to Christians, those that trust in the Lord, as Paul also teaches in 2 Corinthians 3, 4 and 5. When Paul said, and we have such trust through Christ toward God, not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. Our study of why should one trust the Lord is just ahead. But first, how about a free periodical from our friends at ApologeticsPress.org.

SPEAKER 01 :
And friends, before you make that call for your copy of Valor and Virtue, I want you to say Valor 2 when you call. I’m going to double that offer. We have multiple copies of this great publication, Valor and Virtue, so when you call, say Valor 2, and we’ll give you two separate copies absolutely free. We want to let you know that, and thank you always for listening. Let’s begin by thinking and considering one should trust in the Lord because of the patience that God provides. We learn that from James chapter 1 verses 2 through 4. We know from Ephesians 6 and verse 11 that Satan is one who is wily. The devil is wily in all that he does. He’s going to seek whom he may devour according to 1 Peter 5 and verse 8. Yes indeed friends, those faithful unto God will be tried and tested. And one can have obedient and strong faith but sometimes things do not work the way we think they should. And developed patience through one’s faith will help one through those trying times. It’s how Paul could say in 2 Corinthians 12 and verse 10, Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities and reproaches and necessities and persecutions and distresses for Christ’s sake. Here’s why. For when I am weak, then am I strong. And earlier in 2 Corinthians 4, verses 8-9, we are troubled on every side, yet not distressed. We are perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not forsaken. Cast down, but not destroyed. Oh, friends, when I think of the things that I have endured through the strength of my Lord, I have to admit, things were better because I endured with God’s help through my faith and patience in Him. And to God be the glory always. You see, friends, without God, one is without help and without hope. And if one remains faithful to Him during those trying times, the chances of being delivered are greatly improved. As a matter of fact, one will make it. That patience, that endurance helps one to hold up through those times. Let’s consider second. One should trust in the Lord because of the wisdom that is granted. We note this from verses 5 through 7. As in faith there is dedication and consistent faithful living. And if one doesn’t know how to handle things that come along, then through one’s obedient faith, one should pray for that guidance and better understanding as one presses onward. As one deals with the matters that are ahead of them, one should always seek and search God’s will through His divine word, the Bible, to grow in knowledge of that matter that it may be dealt with properly. Now, please note, friends, James said, ask in faith. I think of Matthew 7, verses 7 and 8, when Jesus said, Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Facing one’s troubles and trials in life, one’s developed patience and endurance helps as one turns those struggles over and the challenges over to God in prayer. We pray unto Him when we’re struggling, when we’re hurting. And with wisdom, there is that necessity of knowledge. Studying God’s will and the application therein. We have an awesome study offer that’s absolutely free. It is a video offer that we will give you the link and let you learn more as we go back to the Bible with our friend Rob Whitaker. Here is our J-Web with more details.

And again, friends, you’re back to the Bible study. We will return to your email. We’ll respond with the link that you can go and view this great series. Let’s continue and conclude our study today of why should one trust in the Lord. Well, one should trust in the Lord because of the stability that is supplied, as we note from James 1 in verse 8. We understand a double-minded man, one who is not stable, who is shifted or unbalanced. Other words are unreliable and fickle. Vine defines it as being out of order. And one who is unstable before his Lord is going to be unstable with other matters in his life. Let’s think about what are some things that cause one to be double-minded. Well, worldly living, for example. In Matthew 6, 19-24, Jesus instructs of how treasure should be laid up in heaven, how we should always put the Lord first in all that we do. Sometimes we try to address the matters ourselves. Problems arise and one pulls away from God. Faith is abandoned. Patience failed to help because one failed to ask and ceased in doing and serving and allowed the world to dictate what’s going on. Jesus warned the church in Revelation 3 and verse 16 about lukewarmness. That church at Laodicea, you are lukewarm. You’re not hot. You’re not cold. You’re just enough to deceive yourselves thinking that you are all right. Note the words of Jesus, I will spew you forth out of my mouth. I will not have this. There are erroneous teachings that what appears to be truth but actually is false. Paul warned of those that would teach another gospel in Galatians 1, 6, and 7. and warned to avoid those individuals, even going over to Romans 16 to mark them, to note those who would teach things that appeared to be truth. Friends, we want you to take the Scripture and to compare what we say on our broadcast here. So many times there are objections, but they lack in scriptural support. But rather let us be seekers of the word, and go thereby, and go and study therein. The question we would ask is, are we unstable? You know, hope is that anchor of the soul, though sure and steadfast, Hebrews 6 and verse 19. A hope that one has when one trusts in the Lord and lives for Him. Today we considered, why should one trust in the Lord? because of the patience and endurance that God will provide, the wisdom that is granted through the power of prayer to strengthen us along the way, and the stability to keep one not to be double-minded, but have one’s mind on Christ. Philippians 2 and verse 5. These are lessons that are vitally important for us to press onward as we walk in our lives for the Lord. This is why one should trust the Lord and how thankful we are for the lesson text of James 1, 1-8 that helps us in our study. Again, as a quick reminder before we end our broadcast, Our free publication today is Valor and Virtue. You can receive that by calling us toll free at 855-444-6988 and leave us your name and address and also say Valor 2 so we can send you two different editions of Valor and Virtue.
